The live action version is freaking hilarious! The most corniest thing I have ever seen. My friend has the whole first season of it on DVD.
The American live action version, that I don't think even aired, isn't worth even looking at. It's not even fun corny, it's just sad corny.

on a tenuously linked concern, could anyone tell me what the live action movies of 'Death Note' are like?

Somewhat similar to the manga and anime, tweaked and shortened for drama and length purposes. Mainly for drama. It doesn't really feel like a movie though, although it could be because I saw the TV version of the 1st movie (saw the 2nd at a proper cinema).
Not gonna post spoilers though, since the most major change is the ending of the 2nd movie.
