(On the television, a news broadcast plays, accompanied by splashy graphics.)
Voiceover: This is Daily Global News, bringing you the latest in world headlines around and about. And now, we go on to our meteorology department.
Newscaster: It has been about a week since major typhoons occurred, followed by global floods that permeated coastal communities around the world.
(Montage of the storms from the original film, and a parade of rowboats)
These storms were fierce, treacherous, and resulted in tremendous damage, and the relocation and evacuation of countless citizens from towns, cities, and metropolises alike. As of now, meteorologists are still baffled as to how the storms left as soon as they came. While a sudden surge of global warming has been held accountable for the cause of the typhoons, there is scarce evidence to prove that global warming caused them. The question is: What exactly caused the storms? What is the factor behind all of this, and when and where will it strike next?
(Morning. We see Ponyo, sleeping safe and sound, across from Sosuke’s bed. Lisa enters the room.)
Lisa: (opens the blinds) Rise and shine, kids! (strokes Ponyo) Wake up, Ponyo. It’s a very special day today.
Ponyo: (as Sosuke gets up from his bed) (grumbling) What’s going on? I didn’t get a lot of sleep.
Sosuke: Yeah, mom, I didn’t get a lot of sleep either. What’s going on?
Lisa: (as Ponyo gets up) I just got a call from your dad, and he said he can make it home today.
Sosuke: All right!
Ponyo: Wait… what’s going on?
(On the road.)
Car radio: Major coastal and port cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Shanghai were hit hard, yet miraculously, no casualties were reported in the storms, or in the panic that followed. Citizens of cities and residents of towns are fearful of whatever caused the storms, and are demanding explanations. As a result, government officials have lead to the somewhat profound conclusion that someone or some people were responsible for the weather patterns, and as a result, those people will be brought to justice by federal law.
Lisa: (turns the radio off) All this talk about the storms just keeps going on forever. It looks like people are really wondering what caused those typhoons to occur.
Sosuke: Hopefully, if the government questions us, we’ll never tell them the truth.
Ponyo: All of a sudden, I’m starting to feel guilty of what I did.
Sosuke: You’re only five, Ponyo. Children at this age don’t really know what’s right from wrong.
Lisa: But that’s why it’s important to have parents. They help guide you in choosing what’s right from wrong. And that is Koichi’s job when he is not at sea.
Ponyo: (turns to Lisa) But technically, Koichi is not my father by birth. He’s Sosuke’s dad. I mean, I’ve only been part of this family for about half a week.
Sosuke: But in the long run, you’ll get used to Koichi being your dad right now. Just wait and see.
Ponyo: (to herself) I don’t know about that.
(Tomonoura docks. Two ships are being towed out to sea by tugboats. A third ship, the Koganei Maru, enters the port. Lisa’s car pulls up to a parking lot. Lisa, Sosuke, and Ponyo disembark, and walk over to the platform.)
Ponyo: (runs out) Cars! Cars! Cars!
Sosuke: (stops Ponyo before she runs out to the street) You don’t want to get hit by them.
Lisa: That’s right, kids. We should always proceed slowly, and with caution when we cross parking lots and streets. This way, kids. Koichi’s ship is supposed to arrive at platform C.
Sosuke: I see it. She’s already there! C’mon, guys!
Ponyo: (excited) It’s here! It’s here!
Lisa: This way, Ponyo.
Ponyo: Okay!
(They approach platform C, as the Koganei’s sailors disembark from the ship. Lisa instantly recognizes one of the men.)
Lisa: There he is! (runs to the ship’s stairway) Ponyo, stay with Sosuke. Koichi!
Koichi: (responds) Lisa! (runs to Lisa) There you are! (Lisa and Koichi run into each other arms and embrace, laughing.)
Lisa: (kisses Koichi) I missed you so much.
Koichi: I had you on my mind 24/7.
Sosuke: (to Ponyo as she looks in confusion) They are this happy every time he comes back.
Koichi: (walks over and hugs Sosuke) How are you doing, chap? Are you taking care of your mother well?
Sosuke: I’m doing good.
Koichi: That’s my boy. (turns to Ponyo) And how are you doing, Ponyo?
Ponyo: I’m doing SUPER!
Koichi: (to Lisa) She is just so energetic.
Lisa: Only sometimes.
Sosuke: I’m hungry. What’s for lunch?
Ponyo: How about Noodle Hub? It’s my favorite.
Koichi: That’s right! I love that place.
Lisa: And they have their all-you-can-eat special offer, starting today!
Ponyo: YAYYYY!
Sosuke: Relax, Ponyo. We haven’t eaten yet.
(Noodle Hub is a small restaurant next to the 2Tomo Shopping Plaza.)
Koichi: Sosuke, what would you like to order?
Sosuke: I would like a beef udon deluxe with green onions.
Koichi: What about you, Ponyo?
Ponyo: I would like a poultry premium chow mien.
Waiter: (arrives) Welcome to Noodle Hub. What may we serve you?
Lisa: I would like a spicy seafood ramen.
Koichi: A vegetable udon for me.
Ponyo: I want a poultry premium chow mien with extra ham.
Waiter: I don’t know about that. We are running low on ham today.
Ponyo: That’s all right.
Sosuke: And I would like a beef udon deluxe with green onions.
Waiter: (takes the menus) Thank you, we’ll bring you your orders in a jiffy. (leaves)
Koichi: So Ponyo, how did you learn to walk on water?
Lisa: SHH! Koichi, quiet!
Koichi: What’s wrong?
Lisa: (whispering) Haven’t you heard the news? The government is cracking down on individuals across the globe, saying that someone was responsible for the storms. Imagine what would happen if people found out that Ponyo caused the storms. They’d probably question us for hours or lock us up for life!
Koichi: (whispering back) Relax. She’s only a child. And plus, no one onboard the Koganei Maru had cameras that day. Even if I told it to my fellow sailors, they wouldn’t believe me at all, as I was the only person on board who saw her riding the waves.
Lisa: Are you sure, Koichi?
Koichi: Yes, I am sure.
Ponyo: Sosuke’s dad? What’s going on?
Koichi: Nothing. We’re just making sure you’re okay.
Waiter: (returns with dishes) Here are your orders. Enjoy!
Sosuke: Thank you. (starts eating) This is good.
Ponyo: All right! Let’s dig in!
Lisa: (tastes her meal) Ooh, this sure is spicier than I thought.
(Lisa’s house, late afternoon. The car pulls up front of the garage, and Lisa, Koichi, Sosuke, and Ponyo step out.)
Ponyo: (runs out) At last! We’re home! We’re home!
Sosuke: That beef udon deluxe sure filled me up well.
Koichi: I haven’t seen our house since last week. Isn’t it a delight to finally be home after seven long days at sea, thirty miles away from home?
Ponyo: I guess.
Sosuke: If I was away from home for just two days, I’d be homesick.
Lisa: (opens the door for everyone) Welcome back, everyone.
Koichi: (walks in) Home sweet home. Ponyo, can you imagine being at work for a week? It sounds insane, but that’s my job all right. Too bad I only get to relax for two days.
Ponyo: What do you mean?
Koichi: After that, I have to catch the next work shift.
