I know that this site is about Studio Ghibli and anime, but does anybody here read Manga? I'm trying to get into it, and I've been searching the web for a long time trying to find a very creative and unique fantasy manga I could read. Something Miyazaki-ish. I would read the old Nausicaa manga, but the ones in English are out of print. But I read that from Wikipedia, so, who knows?

PS - Don't suggest Naruto.

I suggest Naruto.

Sorry, had to do it. But really, I suggest reading Akira if you haven't already. It's one the best manga out there in my opinion. It's also one of the more well known ones. It was made in to a movie too, but the manga is far superior.

Unfortunately, it's not very Miyazaki-like. But hey, maybe you'll like it if you give it a try and don't mind lots of violence.

@zacharykrodel

Actually I never tried reading Naruto, but I always thought I'd never like it. But maybe I should try it and see if I like it after all.

It's just that I'm looking for something very fantasy like, that involves things like strange creatures and magic and stuff like that. Like something out of a Miyazaki film.

Thanks for suggesting Akira, but I searched it online and, in my opinion, it just seems so violent it's disturbing, and I usually don't even mind violence, lol.

But thanks for the suggestions anyway

Ja, a few of us here read manga.

I'm reading D.Gray-man at the moment, which is a very good one. You might well like it. Should look it up.

The other manga I read and liked was Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. That's very fantasy-ish, the characters travel through time and to different dimensions... it's good. Hmm... there's also Fruits Basket. That's a nice, gentle enough story. Slice-of-life type, with just a little fantasy. More emphasis on the romance there.

I, too, like Fruits Basket...

also,

Kare Kano
Wish
Miki Falls
Chobits
Love hina
Ral Grad (much fantasy)

I have all of these and more and enjoy re-reading them from time to time. The ones that I read and don't care for that much, I donate to the library for their manga collection. Which is pretty large now, actually. They have a youth librarian that is fairly young herself and we talk about the different manga and I get some excellent leads on books that I might like from her.

I am not into the violence, per se, but do read and watch some of it... I am more into the comedy aspect of life...

Eh, read too many. Now reading "51 ways to save my girlfriend", which is a post-earthquake setting in Tokyo, like the anime Tokyo Magnitude, except through the eyes of different people, and more horrible situations.

By the way, if you have the time, look up Emanon. Very nice.

Roar... If you are refering to Omoide Emanon, I looked it up and it sounds most interesting, but it is not on eBay and so I will have to look around to find it. Our library may even have it although that is a long shot...

Thanks for the info...

This is slightly embarassing but I read over 80 different ongoing mangas. I read them online (I buy the books where I can but I have extremely little access to any manga beyond Naruto/Bleach/Death Note) and keep up with them via the 'bookmarking' option on the website I use. It generally averages out at being a chapter or two every other day.

I mostly read shoujo so I'm not sure how much help I can be with the kind of manga you're looking for, but perhaps try Pandora Hearts. That involves a lot of fantasy and magic and is pretty popular.

If you decide to branch out into highschool/shoujo manga I may be slightly more helpful :')

I only started reading manga maybe two months ago, but I'm enjoying it so much! Fortunately I've found some good places to buy manga in town, so I'm making my way through Kare Kano and Death Note (gradually as they come in stock at the store). Thanks to Book Off, It's actually much easier and cheaper to find manga in Japanese, so I'm trying my best to read some Japanese manga, like Whisper of the Heart. But it takes a lot of effort. Also Welcome to the NHK, which is not so difficult.

Ooh, speaking of which, Roar - your website has a scanlation of Whisper doesn't it? Jiburikiddo, if you liked Whisper as a Ghibli film then you might like to read that one.

I bought the full set of Japanese Nausicaas since they were only a couple dollars each, but the english ones are really hard to find. I think Ebay might be my last resort...

The trouble is where to find room in my book shelf...

Thank you all for your suggestions! I think I'll see if I can find Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles and Whisper of the Heart, those I think I'll like best. Thank you, again!

Not very fantasy-ish or Ghibli-ish, but Naoki Urasawa's two series Monster and 20th Century Boys are both extraordinary. Definitely check them out if you want something suspenseful, but with lots of depth.

I don't think you'll be able to find Whisper in English, but you can read Roarkiller's version and, if you want to credit the authour, buy the Japanese one (耳をすませば).

I'd get Shoujomanga's version for the first volume, actually. Those are so much better compared to my lame attempt.

Unfortunately, the second volume has been translated by me only, so prepare a barf bag while reading.

Thanks

I guess I'm rather Ghibli-exclusive in regards to anime/manga. But I discovered Yotsuba a while ago and got addicted. Gentle and joyufyul. Zero fantasy, though.
