10th Anniversary of Spirited AwayPost Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by Jiburikiddo Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

July 27th was the 10th anniversary of Spirited Away! I almost forgot. I would have celebrated somehow, haha, but anyway, since we just passed Spirited Away's 10th anniversary, maybe you could share your favourite scene and/or something you liked about the movie.

My favourite scene in Spirited Away was when Haku (in his dragon form) was being chased by the shreds of paper..

The train of shadow people travelling across the flooded land. Its magical, peaceful, odd, ethereal, disconnected, sad and also somehow comforting.

I think as a 10th anniversary celeb I shall watch it tonight!

Not to be copying Saddles, but the train scenes are my favs as well. It reminds me of riding the Japanese trains back in the mid-sixties...

I agree! The train scene and the the dragon scene are by far my favourite parts of the film.

Spirited Away was the first Miyazaki film I ever saw, and not only did I fall in love with Ghibli, but I fell in love with animation in general. All thanks to one movie.

I think Spirited Away is deservedly Ghibli's most famous "ambassador". It hit the cinema screens in the west at just the right point in time when anime was becoming known to the main stream and it was both brilliantly executed technically and sufficiently steeped in Japanese folklore for it to be both entertaining and enigmatic. I am sure many tens of thousands of people were switched onto anime in just the way you were.

I popped the DVD in a couple weeks ago to re-watch spirited away, not knowing that the anniversary was so close. It's hard to believe it's been ten years!

The train scene is my favourite as well, but my second favourite is probably when Chihiro has to wash the stink spirit. I really like her combination of determination and incompetence.

I also played the DVD last sunday (only to find it was scratched ) , it's funny the coincidence.

And, of course, I also love so much that train scene - I think that that one and the bus stop at Totoro are the two most emblematic Ghibli scenes! (and I'll shamelessly plug my guitar cover here )

Two little things about the movie that are probably not "great scenes" but that are very dear to me, they got me hooked into Ghibli: 1) the moment when Chihiro leaves her parents eating, and that slightly ominous-exotic music plays; 2) Kamaji's place, specially the wooden drawers (I can't explain why -it's just wood!- but I liked that detail so much).

Cheers to Miyazaki-san for such a fascinating, rich and crazily beatiful movie!

My favorite scene is the initial shock Chihiro experienced when the ferryboat landed with the Kasuga spirits. The music and imagery amplified what is any young kid's worst nighmare: suddenly being separated from her parents and lost.

The train scene could have been my favorite if it weren't for my initial viewing experience. I finished two Venti Starbuck's coffees before sitting down and after waiting about 45 minutes in line. I had no idea the movie was that long...

Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi will always be special to me. It was the first ever Ghibli production that I saw. The whole movie was an amazing adventure and after that I was hooked

The train scene is arguably the best ghibli scene.

But the most memorable scene to me is the beginning when the title is shown. Chihiro's situation was explained so naturally, and when the title came up, cue in the highlight of One Summer's Day, and the natural setting with the music was so hauntingly melancholic, I almost felt a tear in my eyes.

I tell you, I don't care if SA isn't the best ghibli movie. The beginning is THE best amongst all the movies without any doubt.

I love SA because before it, I didn't think of Ghiblies as Ghiblies...just as really amazing movies.

Oh, I sooo hear this! The beginning, with that music was just beautiful. Hooked me without trying.

My favourite thing about it was that seemless hint of something more sinister and magical than the ordinariness of moving to a new town. The anticipation of 'something is about to happen' was amazing.

Also, that moment of quiet that Chihiro has when Haku takes her to see her parents. That morning scene has such a contrast with the craziness of the bath house, it just sticks in my mind. <3

I love Spirited away. Mononoke hime was my introduction to the wonderful world of Ghibli and therefore is still my favourite, but Spirited away and Totoro come very close. For me Spirited away is Joe Hisaishi's best work and my favorite scenes are closely linked to the music played in it.
1. Beginning scene and One summer's day. Like roarkiller said, this scene explains Chihiro's situation naturally. And One summer day kind of shows how lonely and sad Chihiro is. Every time I hear One summer's day I think of Chihiro lying in the back of the car, leaving all she knows behind and not yet aware of the adventures lying ahead.
2.Train scene and Sixth station. This is is full of a kind of sad beauty. Just the way that Chihiro and noface sit next to each other in the train, looking out on the desert land that lies before them.
3.The flight back to the bathhouse with Haku and Reprise. The scene where Chihiro tells Haku his real name could have been made over-sentimentally, like such scenes are usually made in western cartoons. But it's not. Chihiro just tells Haku his real name and Haku transforms into a boy again. They both cry but there's nothing soppy about the scene. And Reprise is such a beautiful emotional song, perfect for the climax of the movie

As everyone has already said the train scene, I'm gonna have to go with the moment night begins to fall on the abandoned town at the start of the film.

The music building up as Chihiro runs down the street as the lanterns light up......goosebumps every time.

I'm not sure about a favorite scene, but this movie has the best ending credits ever!
