Over Analyzing MoviesPost Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

Over the past few years, I've been increasingly more interesting in how films are made; everything from writing, to cinematography, animation, CGI, and other things. But now I feel as if I over analyze movies too much. My friends and family get kind of annoyed at how much I over analyze things. They tell me to just "watch the movie". The thing is, I find it enjoyable to do more than just "watch the movie". I like to fully explore it.

This isn't really a question. I'm just wondering what everyone thinks of this. It's kind of bugging me.

I used to do the same thing back when I was younger, WAY before CGI. We're talking of the days of black and white TV and a lot of movies. When mashed (or whipped) potatoes were used for ice cream because the hot lights needed for filming would melt the ice cream too fast to be of any use. Can you imagine eating a mashed potatoe cone and pretending that it is ice cream??? Now THAT is acting, lol. Or using chocolate syrup to simulate blood or the use of shadows and lighting alone to create a 'mood'... This is why films like "Citizen Kane" became such hits, because of the expertise of the directors, etc. I knew a lot of this stuff from my reading and I would tell people about how a scene was done. I did not make any friends at those times...

Finally, I just said to hell with it and, as you say, just enjoyed the film for the story it was trying to tell.

BTW, the potatoes was even used in color filming until cooler lighting came about... There were a lot of tricks to filming that most people didn't know about.

I do exactly the same thing, sometimes i think of alternative plots while the films going though.
I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but if you have friends watching it with you it cant hurt to watch more and talk less.

If you're just watching a movie for plot, you're missing 99% of the movie. But since your friends don't seem to understand this, it's probably best to keep comments at a minimum. Just understand that there's nothing wrong with you; you're just able to appreciate film on a much deeper level than any of your friends.

There is nothing wrong with that!!! I am an A level film studies student and because of that I find myself doing it alot aswell, i don't think there is anything wrong with it. I love looking at scenes and thinking more about the feelings it creates and the directors intentions and how that is put across in the cinematography, story, dialogue and Mise - en - scene.

I favour films more now that i actively watch them rather than passively watch them and take them at face value.

Besides i think that analysing a film more allows you to come to a better opinion of it, most films nowadays are so similar and mass produced that we all tend to have the same opinion about films.

So there isn't anything wrong in analysing a film. TBH I don't think you can really over analyse a film, unless you create things from nothing remotely about the film. but untill then you are not over analysing a film.
