Is there a ghibli movie that you simply can't watch, no mattter how much you'd like to? For me it's Hotaru no haka (Grave of the fireflies). I have watched it before, but for the last year and a half, I haven't been abled to watch it, because it brings out so much emotions in me. Maybe I've just becomen more sensitive and can't watch really "angsty" films anymore. I've tried watching it a few times, but had to stop after a few minutes. It really bothers me, because on an intellectual level, I know that it's a great piece of art and I'd really want to see it, but every time I try to the emotions just get the best of me. It's really weird, because I used to be abled to watch much more emotionally difficault films than Grave of the fireflies.

I can't watch Tales of Earthsea, not because it is emotional for me but i think it is the worst ghibli film made to date.

I was reading up on it once i had watched it and the author of the books it was based on said it couldn't have been further from what she had written even if they had tried. so for Goro Miyazaki it was not his best directorial debut.

as well as that i read he and his father argued over it as hayao felt he needed to make it on his own rather than ride the wave of his fathers fame. but i know goro is doing another film so lets hope this one is alot better.

I have to agree with you though i do find that Grave of the Fireflies is the least watched of my collection. it is so sad i can't watch it as often as i would like to, compared to the other films in my collection.

As I have mentioned in the Tavern before, I do not see myself watching "Grave of the Fireflies" again any time soon. I may in the future, but I just don't know... I was very emotionally affected by this movie and I didn't know why. It was the war aspect of it as I have seen worse (wartime horror) in other movies. I finally realized what got to me about the story was the ages of the brother and sister.

When I was young (9-1/2) I started taking care of my 3 day old baby sister and from that point on I pretty much raised her because mom was so busy working, etc. I even had dreams of, well they were to involved to go into here, but I would die simply trying to feed her and I wasn't afraid of it. I was big brother and it was my duty as well as my love.

I found that the age difference between the broyther and sister was about the same and I think THAT more than anything was the reason for the emotional response. And that was a long time ago, my 'baby' sister is now 55, lol.

The work, as Heidi says, it is a great piece of art, but I just cannot, at this time, bring myself to watch it again. Maybe sometime, but not now...

Even though its probably my favourite Ghibli, I find it very difficult to watch Whisper Of The Heart. I feel sick for days after watching it because all that happened to yohshifumi kondo afterwards... Its a horrible thing to happen to anyone but I really feel like we were robbed of someone who could have become one of the greats of animation, its impossible to know how things would be if he had lived but I always feel that things would be so different if he did... Love the film though....

For me it's The Cat Returns. I have a very bad experience with it so i can't watch this movie after that incident any more.

I dont think there is a ghibli i cant watch, im fine with grave of the fireflies because i like the history of warfare. And it is quite hard to crack me up. I am also fine watching the more romance themed ones, in fact they are proudly my favorite.
