Hi everyone.

I recently bought The Cat Returns with unusual boxart; it's mirrored to that of more recent films such as Totoro, Kikis, Ponyo, ect.

The Cat Returns

It comes in a slipcover that is holographic. I was wondering if this is a legit copy since I have not seen many like it, and if so, are there similar copies like it for Spirited Away, Mononoke, Porco Rosso; other DVDs that dont traditionally have the blue heading.

Hi Mej,

I just did a bit of research for you and I'm afraid this is almost definitely a bootleg copy. Although it has a Disney logo at the top of the case, the company never released Ghibli movies in that format.

May I ask where you got it from?

It could be a production from some other video distributor. A larger picture of the front and back page is needed, particularly the distributor's name, is available.

Thanks for the quick response; I got it from an ebay auction, said it was brand new and I was surprised by what I got. I uploaded images of my dvd for those who are curious











Pardon the bad images; took these with my phone. The front and sides are the same with and without the slipcover.

It looks fairly okay to me. But if I'm not mistaken, Disney DVDs have a special little holographic label somewhere on the box - they always do here at least. Can you find anything like that?

I'm sure it's a bootleg, The Cat Returns is not among the Disney Ghibli DVD's that are out right now with that design.

Out on DVD right now with that design are, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Tales from Earthsea, Ponyo and The secret world of Arrietty.

The back of the slipcover and case has the same design on all of them, and there is in the first 3 a art card, and in all of them a slip with a Disney reward number.

Here is some pictures of the back of the slipcase from Kiki and Totoro.

What they have done, is some photo-shopping of the original cover, so that it looks like the new ones, but the only one out from Disney is this.





I'm sorry for the bad news, but it's really common with Ghibli bootleg DVD's on Ebay, and sometime it's very difficult to see what is right or wrong.

But in this case, they made a mistake, they used the same EAN code on the bootleg, as the one on the original edition (as you can see on my picture of the backcover, and on your picture), if it was a new edition, the EAN code would be new as well

Seriously if this is a bootleg copy, then it's a darn good one. Of course though, ebay has been known to deliver bootleg dvds before. But in my opinion, this looks legit. I could be wrong, I'm not a professional.

Sorry, but it's a bootleg, the EAN (barcode number) is the proof, if it was a new Disney edition, then there would be a new EAN code, as on the new editions of Castle in the sky, Totoro and Kiki, I have them in the old and new editions, and there is different EAN codes on the old and new, as there should be.

But anyway, your copy looks to be really well made, so in that regards, it's Ok, but Studio Ghibli will not make any money on this one, as it's a 100 % bootleg.

You can look here http://disneydvd.disney.go.com/studio-ghibli.html this is the Disney-Ghibli DVD's on the market right now, some of the DVD's are out of print, be course they have been replaced with Blu-ray/DVD combo packs, but the only "The Cat returns" DVD out right now in the US, is the one I have.

People really taking bootlegging to the max. I had the same problem with a copy of Disney's The Little Mermaid - they had reproduced it so so well! The giveaway was that they accidentally burnt the wrong movie to the disk so I was blessed with a French live action film, haha!

I bought mine from eBay too; you've got to be extra-careful there. Sent it right back of course!

Well done Skovgaard! I didn't know about EAN codes. Shame it did turn out to be a bootleg though.
