I have a group of close female friends in my hometown who have my complete trust and are generally just honest, nice people. I think that female friendships can be tricky and sometimes filled with rivalry but I'm hugely lucky in that these girls are the personification of sweetness.

At university I also have a group of good friends, who I'll be living with this year, but my university friends are mostly male and pretty laid back. I'd like to meet more people.

I have a problem defining the term 'friend' anymore.

I understand what you mean, Roar... 'Friends' is a term that, in this day and age, can be very loosely translated.

I have a lady who is a friend, both her AND her family. I have know her since she was only 13 and she is now 57 irc. This just shows how long we all have known each other and I truly consider them friends... I have a friend who lives near me that I met about 13 yrs ago. We both served in the Navy, but not together and just met by happenstance online. I consider Bob a close friend, one who I trust.

Now days the ones that most people call ''friends' would really come under the heading of 'acquaintances' and I have dozens of them. For myself, most of the people who I referred to as 'friends' in my first post are actually acquaintances. People I have met and come to know through common activities, I don't REALLY know them Not their likes and dislikes, their families, other activities, etc.

Even the good people that I know in the Tavern can't really be termed as friends other than we are 'friendly' with one another. I'd like to be considered friends with all of you, but in reality we are just acquainted with one another through our love of Ghibli. We have come to know some things about each other, our likes and dislikes to some extant, how we feel on some subjects and even some things about our personal lives.

We share quite a bit here in the Tavern, but we have never met face to face and, quite likely, never will, mostly because of the distances involved. Probably the closest member living to me would probably be Jusomekid. We know about each other and we are only about 40 miles apart, but I have never thought about going somewhere and meeting up with him and I don't believe he has either. Probably, the only way any of us would ever meet is by way of the promise I made long ago about all going to see the Ghibli Museum together IF I ever won the lottery and that is a promise, I truly mean. It would be a logistical nightmare, but worth it, IMO. lol...

Dictionary definitions:

acquaintance n a slight knowledge; a person someone knows slightly.

friend n a person (other than a relative or a lover) with whom one is on terms of mutual affection; a supporter of a cause; a person on the same side in a conflict..

Having read these definitions, maybe we can call ourselves friends, assuming a 'mutual affection' for one another.

Friends... I have a medium sized group of friends whom I know quite personally, hang out with everyday at school, etc. However, most of my better friends moved on to the Highschool now. Most of them come back to visit every other Friday so we can hang out in the public park a street away from the school, but I miss do them (though I'd never admit it). My 2 best friends are in my grade, and we try to stay as close as possible, despite not having any classes together. And I have another really close friend, whom I go to the park with every week.

Mm friends. I have a group of really close friends (lol NC, mostly guys for me) ... I've had pretty bad experiences with female friends when I've grown close to them. Painful drama, and left me feeling pretty horrible about myself. Though I do have a couple really great girlfriends who are there for me at every turn.

It's nice after a few years of university, all your superficial friendships kinda fade away and you're left with people who are in for the long haul. I don't like transient friendships, based only on proximity and common schedules. Those people I'd include in my social circle and call friends of convenience, but don't generally feel much warmth towards. Need the deeper connection imo ^^

Hmm and then there are online friends, some of whom I've grown incredibly (and unimaginably) close to. In the craziness that surrounds online interactions, I feel pretty lucky to have run into a few awesome people.

Making friends is something I find pretty difficult a lot of the time, but at university I've managed to make quite a few, especially since joining the Japanese department. Now that I'm in Kyoto I'm getting to know the others in the dorm a lot faster than I normally would, which is fun, but I wonder if they'll be long-term friendships, as I'm now out of touch with the people I lived with at the beginning of university and this is a similar situation.

Some time ago I found that it was easier to make friends online, but now I think it's a bit tricky, and I haven't made any new friends online for quite a while. I'm also not really in touch with many of them now, which makes me sad sometimes.

New discussion of the day...

What do we do for fun?

Me, I enjoy reading, watching anime, playing bingo, saltwater fishing when I can (I'm about 100 miles from the ocean), I spend a good portion of my time working with the local historical society (I get really jazzed when I find a picture of an street scene from my area that I can compare with the present)...

Internet. Internet is my fun. As far as hobbies go I guess watching anime and singing are the main ones.

When in happy mood

work in the personal development projects[software]

when in sad mood

talk about various problem about the world and try to think a solution of it

both of the things are worth a lot of fun to me.

studying is also a part of fun things i do. but it is always that the books[subjects] i have this semester is not liked[or is not enjoyable] by me, but it is always greatly enjoyable when it is not in the semester syllabus. really frustrating.

Play piano, write music, study Japanese, read books, try to write books. And I'll play the occasional video game. These days mostly indie games on Steam.

The freedom to go just about anyplace in the country without having to get some official approval first. It used to be that way in going to either Mexico or Canada, but because of 9/11 you need a passport to get back into the States...

Seems funny, tho... I can go fishing off of a salt-water pier without a license in California, but to fish in a lake, stream or river or a salt-water beach I have to have a fishing license... ??? curious...

I love the fact that there are libraries where you can go and check out all the books you can read for FREE!!! Even get GDs, DVDs and use the computers for FREE! remarkable!

The wide open spaces and open land and mountain areas where you can go hiking or hunting (in season). Can't do that anymore because of my knees, but I enjoyed it when I was younger... (NOTE TO ALL: Take care of your knees)

Voting in elections or for new laws or changes in them, etc. It may not go the way I wanted it to go, but at least I was able to express my opinion by my vote.

I love my country because it's because of my country I have been able to go to an expensive university but still won't go broke just to go here. And the people I've met. <3

I also realized I LOVE Canadian studies. A lot. And it's not about the good on Canada. I love being able to take a deeper look at this nation and learn so much more about it that I normally wouldn't. It was a class I signed up for last minute and I completely adore it. Ahhhhhhh. I love it. D:

Britain:

1) How beautiful it is, how amazingly pretty its countryside and landscapes.

2) Its rich history, its convoluted past. Its monarchs, wars, different races and the ebb and flow of all that.

3) Our proud contribution we've made and still make to the world. Our scientists, inventors, writers, artists.

Bangladesh:

1. You are free to think anyway you like acting is different but in many places of the world people cant think freely, the power of people over any local situation as long as they are brave, the free-speech of media about any matter actively or passively.

2.The friendly behavior of people the helpfulness and warmth that they give even to complete strangers it is truly amazing, such as if i ask saddle where do you live what is your phone number what is your monthly income he will probably think i am interfering in his business but here anyone can be personal so you will never feel lost in people.

3.FOOD. the most important thing, i do not think there is anyplace in the world there food tastes better. Nah. Impossible.

4.Beauty, Not man made beauty, truly natural , hill-tracts in the south, red mud in the north green tea fields in the east and most importantly rivers like spider web. The Sky is particularly a beauty you get to see each day.

5.Happiness. It is really strange that even there are soo many problems we are still happy. It is great. The family structure [joint or semi joint families] is particularly helpful to help with loneliness.
