I've mentioned this delightful little series before and its now been redited into a movie, with some extra short scenes added, most noticeably during and after the closing credits.

I highly recommend it.

I've been recommended this anime by a few trustworthy sources now. Considering how short it is, it's probably about time I give it a try. I think I want to watch Evangelion next, but after that, I will be sure to check this one out.

Evangelion? Oh good, perhaps you could begin a thread and post your thoughts as you go. I haven't watched it for years and I've been thinking a lot recently about re-watching it. My daughter's boyfriend is over from America over Christmas and New Year and he's a fan of anime and hasn't seen it so I also plan to sit them both down and do a marathon session over 2 or 3 days.

Evangelion and marathon don't go together, me thinks.

Also Orphic, I totally approve of your sequence. Mainly because Evangelion would probably seem like a chore after watching Eve no Jikan. Juz sayin', it's really that good.

I especially like the visuals in Eve, the blend of CGI and 2D works very well, the colour palettes chosen for the three locations used (boy's apartment, classroom and the cafe) are really subtle and relaxing, there's lots of greys, purples, lilacs and so on in the colours chosen and its a very restful viewing experience.

The camera angles are good too with a lot of panning and tracking shots, unlike the more common fixed camera you see in animations. There's a few hand-held camera effects as well. All these directing decisions draw you into the world more.

I was thinking that the world given to us in Eve would make an interesting basis to use for a role-play game.

Well, that went quick.

I watched it in the original six-episode format, not via the link that Saddletank provided (sorry, missed your note in the Evangelion thread). Now I'm curious to see how they adapted the series into a movie. I feel like the transitions and pacing must be odd, considering how episodic the whole thing is. But it's certainly short enough that a movie version could work.

It's a good series, short and sweet. I don't think I'll be adding it to my list of favorites, but I don't regret watching it by any means. I found it to be a pretty realistic take on androids with some interesting social commentary, and lovely animation throughout. Like Saddletank, I appreciated the not-overbearing use of certain cinematography techniques, like handheld camera shots, that you don't often see in animation. Apart from the satisfying ending, probably the high point of the series for me was Episode 3, which initially made me groan (sexy female robot? come on Japan) but managed to cleverly subvert my expectations by the end. Which isn't to say the show, as a whole, couldn't have been a little more subversive. In general I found it to be rather predictable and a bit too cutesy in places (so many kawaaaiiiiiiii voices, Miyazaki would not be too happy I think), and it didn't really have time to go as deeply into the issues as I would've liked.

They hint at the possibility of a sequel towards the end. I would definitely like to see the story continued, with a bit more focus on Rikuo and Sammy maybe, since there was a suggestion of romantic feelings there. At the same time it bugs me that these romances are ALWAYS between a male human and a female android. Why is that? It would be interesting to see a story that actually focused on a female human in love with a male android, but this show doesn't even have female human characters hardly, so I guess I'll have to wait for that.

The movie version has a series of very interesting drawings in the closing credits which appear to be a story of Nagi's life (the cafe owner), suggesting that she has tried to set up businesses of this sort several times before but always moved on (for reasons not shown). I can see the material for a second series in there. An added closing scene to the movie also suggests her motivations for setting up the non-discriminatory cafe in the first place, aside from the accident/incident hinted at in the suppressed newsfeed.

I agree that more between Sammy and Rikuo would be good to see and it would open up a new set of questions to be addressed. The potential for something rewarding is why I suggested this setting would make a good basis for a role-play.

Its true about the Sammy/Rikuo dynamic, that its a female robot/human male convention. I must be a victim of it too as it honestly never even entered my head that it was such a trope (is that the right word?)

The new ending scene though with Nagi and a person significant to her at her home turns that right on its head, so a second season would be great to see. Rikuo's sister as an antagonist character is worthy of development as well. It rather jarred with me that we only ever saw her half dressed or with lots of bare limbs exposed lazing on the sofa... Maybe this was an attempt to depict the indolence and sloth of humanity but it bugged me that they used a teenaged girl to do this, Rikuo could so easily have had a brother to depict this role.

A fair review of the movie version:

While bouncing around various blogs I discovered that Yasuhiro Yoshiura the director of Time of Eve also made Pale Cocoon in 2003. That too is one of my favourite animes, very enigmatic and claustrophobic but full of the same nice artwork and soft colouring as Eve.
