I watched this film quite a while ago.
I enjoyed the concept quite a bit. In fact, I liked the ideas behind the film so much that I wish the execution had possessed that certain special touch which elevates films to classics. It didn't quite go there for me, but it was still a very enjoyable story.

I'm going to watch these this weekend! 
Edit: Just started. The premise of this is really brilliant. I wonder if it was based on a book? It feels a bit like watching a book being read.

Yay! But I have to run for a few hours, so I'm hitting pause at the one-hour mark and will be back later tonight. Interesting developments but I'm not entirely sure about where the story is going. It seems like Makoto has something of a white-knight complex for the women in his life whose behaviour offends him. But I like a lot of it so far anyway; it's a really interesting take on suicide and having a fresh shot at life. It's kind of is inspiring me to write a story.

Oh, my Gawd!!!!
I saw this thread and posted your link in youtube, Saddles, and thought, 'Hey, it's only a 2 minute preview, I can do that'... Yeah, right!
2 hours later and here I sit with tears in my eyes... This ranks up there as a truly great anime. The artwork was beautiful and the train scenes... outasight!...
Storyline was a little hard to follow at times, but it all came together in the end.
Thank you for recommending this...
To all my Ghibli friends, if you haven't seen this yet, do so... I don't think you will be sorry...

The subtitles are not the clearest on that copy and they seem to flash them on the screen a little fast at times. I had to hit pause a lot to read them all, especially some of the critical lines when the boy is talking about the tramway and his father is talking at the fishing trip.
A story Mush? Mm, sounds interesting.
The animation is quite curious, the backgrounds are amazing, so clear and crisp, almost photo-realistic and the monotone paintings of the old tramways are clearly straight copies of photos. The scene where the B/W still of the tramcar slowly fills with colour and becomes animated and the subsequent shots of it are simply stunning, up there probably with the kind of artwork Makoto Shinkai produces. I can watch that sequence over and over again, its beautiful.
And then in front of that we get fairly simple character design and some decidedly dodgy motion when characters walk and run with some bent perspective. Its a really peculiar choice of style and I'm left wondering if there's a significance to it.
At times the face of Makoto and his sometimes vapid expression reminded me of Lain from SEL, such similar eyes though I can't think a similarity is intended.
Yeah, Husky it had me in tears both times I watched it. The family scene at the end is intense, you really identify with them and they're all such believable characters.

Ah, I thought so. I was wondering if that's who he would turn out to have been. That was good, and very powerful, thanks.
Yes, it gives me ideas for writing a story, but yeesh, so many other things to do. I'll have to keep it in mind though.
I'm not sure but I think some of the backgrounds were traced photos? It looked like the level of photorealism that nobody can draw. Then again, others looked more definitely drawn but really straddling that border, so who knows. I think it said it's a Sunrise film, and they're known for being very meticulous I think.
I had a very hard time identifying with Makoto for most of the movie, and I really didn't like him after certain things. That kind of diminished the impact of the train scene for me, because I spent most of it thinking this jerk doesn't deserve do be laughing and smiling with a friend right now. He didn't feel like a kind person to me at all, even given the bad things he'd been going through.
I don't know whether we're supposed to like him or not.
But there were some really good touches there, and I'm glad I saw it. I'll be thinking about it for a while.

I saw the story in 3 acts.
In act 1 I think he was generally resentful of being given a second chance to begin with - his conversation at the ticket office into the afterlife showed that. I imagine he thought he'd had it tough (for whatever reason, not sure why he thought that since his memories had been wiped) but then he came back and encountered this happy loving family and nice home and appeared to only feel disgust towards Makoto because why would anyone take their own life in such a loving, comfortable environment? The guy must have been either stupid or vindictive.
Then part 2 of his journey was about finding out why Makoto did what he did and Part 3 was about understanding that people around him were the same as him, were suffering and struggling too, partly through other circumstances, partly through Makoto's selfish actions and also that Makoto's stoic behaviour in the face of bullying had even inspired the awkward girl at school. Redemption and understanding started with the day spent tracing the old tram route and I felt that was a really nice way to make the point. I've done exactly the same thing, walked old railway lines, map and book in hand, wading through mud and undergrowth to find old trackbeds and broken bits of platform hidden in the nettles. I too got that strong sense of melancholy and nostalgia for something lost that can never be brought back. The pictures showing the crowds taking photos of the tram on its last day of service were especially powerful. People turn out to grab a last memory before it vanishes and there's a party atmosphere but by then its too late. You have to grasp opportunities when they are presented before they slip away. You have to "ride the tram" before progress rips its track up and the chance is gone forever.
That concept touched me deeply, it was an elegant way to make the point. Adding on top of that such a series of beautifully animated sequences really made my heart ache.
I need to check out other anime by Sunrise.
