This is a popularity poll done by a T.V. network, so I don't think I would expect "masterpieces" to dominate.

YEESSSS

exactly. most of the shows there is a pretty big franchise got many many many stuffs[anime, manga, light novel, games, action figure bla bla bla]

so for a show which is 15 years old and is not shown in general tv but satellite it will likely to have little chance in those lists. see the wikipedia link of cowboy bebop and you will see the awards and critical success]

That's not entirely true either. For example, No. 9 on the second list (which I find to be the more interesting list) is Heidi, Girl of the Alps, which was directed by our very own Isao Takahata, and is a wonderful adaptation of that story, part of the World Masterpiece Theatre series.

The second list seems to have ended up being a summary of what kids are growing up with today (Naruto, Bleach, etc) along with what older people grew up with and fondly remember from their younger days - for various generations of adults (Touch, Heidi, Astro Boy, Yōkai Ningen Bem, even Sailor Moon). Occasionally you also find some classic series that are aimed at different audiences, like Maison Ikkoku. Meanwhile, anime aimed at the otaku subculture are rare with a few present (such as Air), reflecting the relatively niche position they hold in mainstream Japan.

I think it does give a fairly accurate view of the influential televised anime across generations in Japan.

The second list, that is. The first seems a lot more skewed.

takahata and miyazaki worked on many landmark works. more accurately many landmark works happened in their era. and some of those shows will come because of the interest within people.

and ghibli is a very very respected in japan[so is the directors]. i have read directors grudge on ghibli that people think only ghibli's are worth watching.

i also saw the second list. which is a little better.

i am wondering if NGE was a short run show will it have placed second. it must come within 100 thats right but on the very top, i think the popularity plays more role here than quality.

I would like to know how many of those shows are available only in DVDs. [i think most of them still runs on tv]

then only we can draw conclusions

Well a list compiled by Japanese anime fans, will be different to one compiled by say an American or British person obviously. I think the ignorant idea that the Japanese list is more superior to a list made by an American is nonsense. I have heard people say, oh they created it they know it better than us. They have more variety, but doesn't mean their opinion is valued or worth more than ours.

I wouldn't be able to make a list, because I don't watch as much as most of you do, or as much as others. I am a Anime Virgin I guess, if that's the politically correct term.

Why do we care what's ranked?. Does it really bother you that people don't know these films, or rather they think they are crap because they haven't heard of them.

I get annoyed when I mention a Ghibli film to someone oblivious to it, their immediate assumption is oh it's not know by me it must be crap. Websites like IMDb and RottenTomatoes, have too big of an influence in the way we judge films.

Good to see that one at No.2. See? See? I told you.

Not so surprising really, I would say. A lot of the items on these lists are shows with lasting popularity, that continue to produce merchandise and so on. Utena was popular at the time, but for all its critical success, you don't really see much in the way of news or merchandise now (though I have noticed there seems to be a little bit of a boom at the moment, with some new stuff appearing), and I think the others were fairly low-key.

Evangelion will always chart high on lists of popularity and influence, as long as it keeps on being readapted and referenced. Whatever one thinks of it, it's undeniably a big deal.
