I just started this on Arren's recommendation. Its great, I'm enjoying it very much. The animation is really smooth and the artwork is richly coloured. Characters are fun and the story is... crazy. I don't really know what is going on but its a great watch. Its making me laugh a lot as well.

How much have you watched so far? It follows a particular aspect of the story for quite a while before becoming more complicated. Anyway, it's good to hear that you like it. I didn't think it was perfect, but for the most part it was great.

I'm only 4 eps in so far. I got distinct reminders of Utena at a couple of points - the repetitive fantasy sections using the prince/princess cutout figures in ep 4 and the repeated sequence where Himari gives the boys their missions.
I'm keen to watch more and will probably finish it this week.

The rate at which I'm watching this slowed due to other things that distracted me. I watched Ep 9 yesterday and boy was this one so weird. Nice though and helps add a huge wedge of backstory for the main female.

Ah yes, I remember that one. I think it must be an Ikuhara thing to be able to have a shocking event happen at the end of an episode, then cut away to something completely different rather than address the event right away, without it being completely infuriating.

At ep.21 now and... I really do not know what I am watching. Its beautiful but completely perplexing. There is clearly a lot of metaphor and symbols in this, even allegory. Can anyone explain? I shall probably watch the end of it tonight.

Really, I don't think there's a simple explanation. As with Utena, much of what happens requires personal interpretation. And because of its more real-world setting, the past events in Penguindrum seem even more strange. To me, a lot of the parts in characters' backstories is most likely metaphor, rather than what literally happened. As it gets into the final episodes, it seems even more abstract and removed from the relative normality of the main setting, so that's how I see it. I think the best you can do is try to decide for yourself!
