I was surprised on looking through this forum that we don't actually have a thread for discussing the movie, people's reactions after seeing it.

I was taken (in secret) to see it last night by my daughter for an early father's day gift and I was spellbound from beginning to end. It was an enthralling experience with the most beautiful animation (especially the flying sequences and the sprawling pre-war cityscapes). For me the dichotomy between being an aircraft designer and working to build war machines hardly seemed an issue - Horikoshi was captivated by his dream and had a burning desire to build aircraft, it was merely fate that caused him to live in an era where such planes would be intended for only one purpose.

The biopic being diluted by fiction meshed in well and the bittersweet lovestory between Horikoshi and Nahoko Satomi was heartbreaking.

As I said somewhere else, if I were to retire, leaving this as my final work would be both appropriate and deeply satisfying.

Ah, that sounds like such a good treat! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, because it's been so long since I saw it (back in October I think it was?) I can't really give a well-thought-out review of it. It isn't fresh enough in my mind to say just how I felt about it. I think it was very good, though it had some flaws, and it's certainly not comparable to other Miyazaki works.

There's not even an issue to argue about here, so why start a discussion over it? Its simple good forum etiquette.

Problem is when i opened the thread i also opened another discussion thread . But most people wanted to comment on the news of the films in that thread, just like what are you doing now i also said things like to use that thread bla bla bla.basically which made me ask for some admin privileges.
[remember that big stupid argument over supermod with me you and others].

So the fact is it wont be possible for most of us here to keep track of both the thread.

So the news thread was basically used for everything.

Woo, FINALLY got to watch this one!! Thanks to a friend of mine.

I have to say, this is one of my favourites as far as feeling goes. The whole symbolism of the wind in this movie was so beautiful. How human the earthquake and the sound of the planes is.

I really love Jiro for some reason. I love how naive he is, how lost in the clouds he seems to be. I kind of almost wish this had focused solely on him without the romance bit, but I feel that was important also to his character (and also to one of the major influences for this film, the poet). Miyazaki's films don't really have male leads like Jiro, or films that seem to focus mostly on the male character (there's Ashitaka, but even then, the film itself is named after Sen). So I found this to be particularly important when watching the film. I just... Jiro seems so human, so quirky, and although he's incredibly smart gets lost in his day dreams.

I love anything with a dreamer feel. I love the questions this film brings up just watching it. I love how Jiro is portrayed. I just really, really love this. I didn't actually cry or feel anything tugging at my heart until the very last scene. I just fell apart hearing him say, "Thank you."

While it isn't 100% the best, I feel that this was good for what it was. It could have gone a different way, could have been darker, but this is a children's film. After looking up the poet who also influenced this story, I found his ideas were all through this film. Maybe it doesn't appear completely consistent, but I think that was the point.

I understand Miyazaki's mother was ill with tuberculosis when he was young. I do not know if the illness claimed her life, but I got a strong sense that part of this movie was autobiographical. Jiro designed planes, Miyazaki draws them. Miyazaki has also been drawn to military weapons (aircraft, airships, tanks, etc) in a lot of his artwork and I felt strongly that Miyazaki was telling us something about himself in this story.

The children's father in 'Totoro' bears a striking resemblance to Jiro as well - that character had an ill wife. Perhaps Miyazaki when he was younger looked a little like them both.

I sense he might have decided a long time before completing it to retire after its release. His final word on himself perhaps.

FFF, no recordings of engines or any other sounds were used in the film. Every sound effect was created by human voices. Since the human voice and other sounds are made by moving air, I thought this was a clever and meaningful decision.

I knew it was all human voices.

I was referencing to Tatsuo Hori. Actually, looking at photos of him, he looks a lot like Jiro. lol The glasses especially (well so did the actual Horikoshi XD). I'm not sure how much of an influence Hori was on Miyazaki, but I felt his presence in the film a lot.

Are any of Hori's works translated to English? I can read the French versions too.

So Saddletank I finally got to watch this and well I’m not going to say it’s my favourite or my least favourite Ghibli I do like the animations and scenic views. I watched The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness the night before and its amazing how all his (Miyazaki) films are based on his life experiences, once you watch the documentary you instantly recognise scenes in his films that are from his life.
