It's a documentary about Ghilbi at the time of the making of "The wind rises". Looks wonderful.

My appreciation for Toshio Suzuki has increased, among other things, because he seems to be a guitar player :-)

To see him together with Miyazaki and Takahata, over the Ghibli terrace, looking at the sunset... it's quite a thing to me.

The Japanese blu is English friendly, plus it seems like it will be released in the US this fall. I really enjoyed it.

I have just watched it as well and I echo Saviour's comments.

Everyone who loves Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki's work MUST watch this. It was filmed by a female employee of the studio and covers the period of Kaze Tachinu's production and release and that of Kaguya Hime. There is no narration, the filming is raw and handheld and everything is spontaneous.

There's a lot of film of Miyazaki working and at home. His office routine and his home life. His rambling thoughts and jokes and world views spoken honestly to the camera.

Many Ghibli meetings with Suzuki and other staff, all manner of insights into the ethics of the company and Miyazaki's personal politics; how Kaze Tachinu was conceived and written, how its ending was significantly changed, a very interesting and touching series of scenes of how Hideaki Anno was selected for the voice acting part for Jiro and shots of his work in the sound studio. You can see why Miyazaki chose him, his voice is unique and he seems a very selfless and quiet person - not at all the man I expected given his past works.

Miyazaki comments on some of his past films - Porco Rosso, Spirited Away and Kiki especially- though he has a very sharp sense of humour so its never easy to see when he's joking - which is often.

He has a delightful mind - witty, humorous, sharp, observant, cynical, gentle, left-wing. My respect for him as a person increased a great deal watching this.

A lot of personal and professional tensions between Miyazaki and Takahata are revealed, none of which I knew about.

There is a great deal of personal news about the company and its ultimate failure and you can understand why that happened. I was left with a deep sense of sadness at the end of this film, and yet a much deepened sense of respect for Miyazaki. The difference between his and his company's attitude to what animation is for and the role of money-making in his endeavours is markedly contrasted to companies like Disney which focus entirely on making money.

There's a lot of archive footage as well of Miyazaki, Takahata and Suzuki in earlier years, especially at Toei Animation and other places in the 70s and 80s. Really fascinating stuff.

Its an eye-opening and very touching programme. Please see it.

I really need to get round to watching this! For some reason the DVD is a lot more expensive than most, so I may have to find some other means or else wait for a while.

It will be a few days before I get to see it, but I will give my thoughts about it when seen. I'm looking forward to it.

I know you'll enjoy it. I was thrilled and saddened by it simultaneously, a very curious mix of emotions.

There are so many, many different points about this documentary that all I could do was to write down bits and pieces of it that struck me as important. I watched it twice, actually, which is one reason why this is so long in being posted. That's a long film, but it was necessary IMO.

I'm just going to post notes, as my mind is too full of the entire film. I liked the radio exercise part where the entire company joins in and I think this would be a great idea for all companies, really. It reminded me of "Only Yesterday". This exercising is good in that it helps give the mind and body a short break from the sitting and work going on as well as strengthening the body.

I loved the image of the large drawing/painting, apparently of all of the Ghibli film characters and scenes, hanging on the wall and wish that it was available for all to see. I stopped the film and tried to see as much of it as I could. Not enough!

Like Saddles said, you can clearly see Miyasaki's outlook on politics and life throughout the film. His dislike of nuclear power, a view shared by many Japanese BTW. I remember the demonstrations when I was there in the mid-60's. I don't think we saw much of his home life as the kitchen and other parts like that all seemed to me to be a part of the Studio. The only time I think I saw his house was when he entered his door that one night. His views on his marriage were rather different than I would have thought, married because 'that was the thing to do', seemed so cold for such a man who can draw and tell such stories about families as he does. And you never see him angry and losing is temper. Whether this is factual or just artistic discretion in the filming, I don't know.

I never realized how much time and effort Toshio Suzuki puts into the films made by the Studio. And the difficulties of making the films and keeping the production on schedule. And when you see how Miyasaki times the scenes with a stopwatch as he is drawing them. Viewing the scene in his mind as he sees it to get an idea of how it should be drawn. I never thought about that aspect of the art before.

I enjoyed the flashbacks to their younger years at the Ghibli Studio and before and how they all came to be together. I never knew that Miyasaki was actually younger than Takahata and was brought into the first animation studio (name escapes me at the moment) straight from animation school. And Miyasaki's seemingly endless energy through his long day, running here and there, walking actually, lol, but always on the move, always doing something, but taking the time to view the sunset everyday. And resting with walks in the rooftop garden which is more like a mountain meadow than a garden to my eyes. He is very much a man of habit, working from 11am to 9pm 6 days a week!!! And on his day off (Sunday) he helps with civic chores in his town. Miyazaki's vigor seems endless. And when he relates back to the time he and his family were escaping the fire-bombing and his memories of the events of that terrible time. You can see how his early experiences have come through in his work.

I love the way the passing of time was shown by the changing seasons, snow, cherry blossoms, rain, etc. Pleasing to the mind and eye.

I like the way the ending to "The Wind Also Rises" was decided on at the last minute by Miyasaki while sitting, drawing at his table. And also the views of the Studio work stations when everything was going full tilt in production and compared to when the film is completed and done and everything is quiet and empty. The goodbyes at the wrap party, the tears of some.

I came away from watching this documentary with a better comprehension of the hard work and trials of both the man and the Studio in the production of the Ghibli movies. And I greatly appreciate that and them...

hahaha, no, Seiji, I'm not... Good to see you again, my friend, ltns...
I actually dropped out of high school because I couldn't grasp sentence structuring... I later graduated with a 2 yr degree in college, later and aced the English creative writing course.

That was 40 years ago, lol

Thanks for the complement...
