It's a Cowspiracy!!Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by potatotarzan Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

So... here is what has been largely on my mind recently (besides Rozen Maiden...). I don't usually think much of documentaries. But a few months ago, I came across one that actually changed my life. It is none other than the amazingly-named Cowspiracy.

Would you believe me if I told you that animal agriculture is by far the greatest cause of environmental destruction on basically every front? I wouldn't believe me either! But just take a look at these facts:

http://www.cowspiracy.com/facts/

You don't tend to hear about this information, but now that I know, it has become impossible for me to ignore.

In Cowspiracy, a certain Kip Andersen and his film crew interview representatives from major environmental charities and governmental organizations and discover that everyone seems to be dodging this topic. This is not only because people don't like to be told what to eat, but also because the animal agriculture business is gigantic and powerful and (perhaps understandably) doesn't like the idea of people questioning their consumption of animal products. But the film makes it very clear that this is not something we can continue to ignore.

The documentary can be watched for a price at cowspiracy.com, but if your wallets don't like the idea, I'm sure you can watch it for free somewhere else... While it definitely isn't perfect, I promise it is worth the 90 minutes.

I am curious what you all will think!

Oh dear... I just came across this thread. Now I see why no one was responding... This must have been an annoying deja vu...

I promise I had no desire to start any arguments by making this thread. (Forum arguments tend to be long, drawn-out, and stressful, and basically never result in anyone's opinion changing.)

I guess I just figured that, due to the nature of [some] Studio Ghibli movies, at least a few people on here must be as OCD about environmental stuff as I am, and thus might be interested in this. This information isn't widely known or discussed, so I just wanted to get the word out about it...

I don't think you did anything bad here, its just that 1) we have had some fairly sharp debates in the not-very-distant past and most ended either badly or with no concessions on either side anyway (hence making them a waste of time) and 2) the Tavern is very quiet at the moment with a lot of people stilled chilled after Xmas/New Year and/or busy with starting new academic terms, also possibly 3) You are a brand new member and your second post opened a fairly meaty debate, and we here are just cautious about people who arrive and do that. Its best to chill here for a few months and get to know us and let us get to know you before you go for the deep conversations. Its possible people might think you have an agenda. I'm sure that's not the case but I hope you can see that its an easily-drawn conclusion.

Why not just join in the chit-chat and games and such, post in a few threads and we'll get to know each other.

Me personally? Anything with 'conspiracy' in the title I ignore since I am certain 100% of them are just baseless rumouring. Did we land men on the moon? Most definitely. Who shot JFK? Lee-Harvey Oswald unassisted by any other person or persons unknown. Have aliens come to earth? No, never. Do ghosts exist? Nope. Did the FBI/CIA shoot a missile into the pentagon on 9/11? Nope, it was the plane almost everyone says it was. Bigfoot? A guy in a hairy suit out to get attention and make money. Life after death? Biologically impossible. No heaven, no hell, no nothing.

And so on.

I'm a realist and a humanist. I also happen to adore Studio Ghibli films and a good rom-com anime

I hope I haven't put you off!

I pretty much agree with all your statements, Saddles, in fact that whole paragraph. I know that not all the others feel that way, but that is what is nice about the Tavern. Yes, you and I have had our tiffs, but we are still friends and that is what counts, IMO.

And what you said about newbie potatotarzan seems pretty much spot on... I admit that I felt the way you mentioned at first, but with further postings, I can see where maybe I was wrong... We all hope that you stick around, PT, and do realize that like Saddles said, things are a bit slow right now, mainly because of RL... I'm retired so I am not to hampered by things like work or school, altho I'd like to go beck for a bit... I enjoyed my last years in school, about 40 yrs ago, lol.

WE have people in here from 11 yrs old up to me at 68 (as far as I know, I'm the oldest) and the thing that ties us all together is the fact that we love Ghibli movies. It still amazes me when people remark about my tattoos on the street. Last one was a few days ago, a Fed-Ex delivery was made and the driver commented on them...And they are not all young people, most are in their 20's to 40's. In some of out past threads we have even told why we like them...

Okay, I don't want to feel sneaky or anything, so I'm going to be very explicit: The reason I originally came here was to tell you guys about the documentary. *gets shot*

Here's the order of events:

- I learn about the connection between animal agriculture and the destruction of the environment.
- I think, this is really important! I need to tell people about this!
- I tell a few people about it. The pattern is, if it's someone who is already interested in stuff about the environment, or it's someone I'm friends with, it tends to go well. If it isn't... it is a pointless and very scary experience.
- I think, hey, my thoughts about Nausicaa are part of what's driving me; maybe Nausicaa fans would want to know about this!
- I find that... there are no Nausicaa fansites.
- I find this site. I see it has a much friendlier atmosphere than the forums I'm used to. I think, ah what the heck, it looks fun, and join.
- I post this thread, with a great deal of uncertainty as to whether or not it still makes sense to do so.
- I see that vegetarianism has already been discussed here and that it didn't go so well. I feel stupid.

So there you have it. My cards have been laid on the table for you all to see, and you may ban me if you wish. I have been thinking about a few other topics I'd like to talk about here at some point, such as shojo manga and whether or not Nausicaa is a... "Marie-Sue," but I should also note that my use of forums tends to be cyclic; I tend to disappear for months at a time, so I'm not exactly the most valuable member to have around...

And I get what you guys are saying about conspiracy theories. To be clear, the supposed conspiracy is that the animal agriculture business is keeping people quiet about this issue. The specific facts about animal agriculture's impact on the environment are mostly from the EPA. (The page I linked to at the beginning of this thread lists all the citations.)

I looked at those facts and came to the conclusion that it's better to "go vegan"; I have no arguments beyond that. I didn't know about this information before, and I don't think most people do. If you guys look at those facts and don't come to that conclusion, I have nothing against you. We can just have fun talking about anime and stuff.

haha

i think you are being fair enough.

I must say i once did some how similar things[different subject], for many reasons basically.

The fact is, from my stay in tavern i understood very well that people here are very aware of these things. But it is also a matter of fact that these problems in our world are largely political which no one here has any interest nor any substantial amount of influence on any party . So most of us think it is not going to change that easily.

So why waste time.
As most of the people here like saddle said are very busy. We just mostly hang around and discuss like close friends.

That is what currently tavern is aside from little bits of updates from Ghibli and Anime World.

Sincerely
Saviour

Lol, very well. That's the attitude of my best friend, so I'm used to having to accept it. (I didn't even bother to tell him about the animal ag stuff.)
