Well I haven't watched it yet, though I'm confident of remembering the entire movie's details anyway. So for those who have seen it, discuss away.
As for me, I'm interested in the (theorized) history of the Laputa kingdom.

Eh, both? Wait, is there a fan theory I should know of?
All I know is that the original Laputa seem to have HUGE windblades to lift them, so I wonder if it's safe to believe that the secret of the crystals weren't discovered until later.

Mm, I need to watch the film again to refresh my memory of the opening sequence. Maybe those stills are just Miyazaki fantasies of early flight and are not meant to be a coherent history?
Or maybe those images are flight attempts using the current technology of the film's setting (a late Victorian steampunky universe) and post-date the lost knowledge of the crystals and the Laputans?
I personally don't see the point of a technology of huge propeller blades to keep cities aloft and -then- the crystals being discovered. It strikes me as more logical for the crystals to be discovered first and the flying society to be born out of that.
The fan theory is possibly mine.  I explored a past history of Gondoan culture in my fanfic 'Hills of Moonlight'. Its on fanfiction.dot.net if anyone is interested (shameless plug).
