Hello,
As some of you might have seen, I will be attending the North American premier of "When Marnie was There" at the DGA theater in NYC tonight. One of the things on the top of my mind was the notion that there might be a chance that because it's a special first-time screening for North American audiences, the Studio Ghibli staff behind it (Japanese voice actors, director, and producers) might show up. While neither Hayao Miyazaki nor Isao Takahata were behind this latest movie, long-time producer Toshio Suzuki was a co-producer.

I watched "When Marnie Was There" tonight and I will not say anything about the characters or the storyline. IMO, it ranks up there with the other great Ghibli animes...

I will say that at one point I got shivers up my arms and my back, TOTALLY!!! And yes, I cried.

When you see the movie, you will understand...

I'm now looking forward to reading the book, which I also have...

I actually had my local library purchase the book, because for some reason none of the libraries in my area carried it. I'm hoping to get the copy sometime soon.

I will check with my local library and if they don't have a copy, I will probably donate mine...

haha, I did that with the last Harry Potter book... Just barely got one of the LAST copies at the bookstore, read it twice in three days and donated it to the library which then gave them four copies to lend...

Wow, you read books pretty quickly. I just finished the entire "Wicked Years" Series by Gregory Maguire; after about four months or so. Each book was at least 300 pages - the last one was over 500.

Only thing I can say about the Potter book is that is was an easy read...

I find it amusing that people consider reading an entire Harry Potter book in a day to be amazing. It's one thing if it was a deep complicated novel like Lés Misérables, that one took me two weeks. Simple fiction though, just takes barely a weekend.

But then I'm the type to finish a book at one go so, eh.

It's one thing when I'm reading for pleasure, but I'm reading two other books right now that I have been working my way through for three or four weeks now. I only read them a few pages at a time to more fully study what I'm reading. That is the way it generally is with me and non-fiction.

I kinda gave up with my studies, haha. It's very hard to self-study a difficult subject without proper tutelage. So just fiction for me now.

I'll say it now, as strongly as possible...

DO NOT Read "When Marnie Was There" before you see the movie...!!!

I saw the movie first and enjoyed it and cried towards the end...

I read the book later and very much enjoyed it and cried, again, toward the end of the story...

It filled in a lot of gaps in the movie story, as usual for a movie/book combination...

same with me too. however if its detective kind then i try not to finish it very fast cause there are very few good detective books. and its quite hard to write one.

Some good authors are Tony Hillerman (primarily dealing with the Navajo Tribal Police), Dick Francis (a former British jockey who mainly wrote about racing industry mysteries), and J.A.Jance (who wrote both a series of novels about a Seattle Washington cop and another series about a woman who becomes a Sheriff in her hometown in modern Arizona... even a couple of novels with both of them in it).
Another is Sue Grafton ( her novels follow the alphabet with a female private detective named Kinsey Milhone, like "A is for Alibi", the first in the series.)
Another is Robert B. Parker (who wrote a number of different series', Spencer [made into TV]; Police Chief Stone [made into movies] and others)

One thing about them all, their hero's aren't supermen or women! They do get hurt in some of their activities, physically and sometimes mentally...

Each of these authors novels stand alone, but best if read in the order of printing, not always possible, I know.

I didn't mean for this thread to get into a discussion on comparing how fast one person can read through a novel to another. I take my time reading books because I just don't have a full day to read them. I'd take the book on the train with me to work. Read through a couple chapters before I go to sleep. Several more chapters on the weekend mornings.
