So, I was sitting through Tai Chi Hero (Tai Chi Zero 2), and about 59 minutes in, I sat up straight.

This reminds me of something...

Merry-Go-Round of Life much?

So, was the Tai Chi Hero melody inspired from Ghibli, or is the Howl's Moving Caste theme in fact cultivated from something much older?

What's the origin of that Tai Chi Hero tune, is what I'm getting at.

It does sounds very similar in certain parts. But then when you thing about it, a lot of songs nowadays sound very similar to each other. The overall mood and rhythm (for lack of a better word) is considerably different. Hisaishi's music has a storytale feel to it while other just felt like a playful repeated melody.

For me, that music sounds as pretty standard argentine tango

I'm argentine, and I play tango ... and also Merry-Go-Round of Life ! :-) see my sig

It sounded to me as a "light" Piazzola... (in fact the first four notes of the melody are exactly the same as Calambre Seems to be the first track here http://www.emusic.com/album/various-arti...ensky/11647016/

I don't see a strinking resemblance, there is certainly some common elements in the phrase structure, but, as Roarkiller says, that's not rare: most "common" music (this includes from Haendel to Brahms... and most western popular music of last 150 years, including Beatles, Hisaishi and practically all music from movies and radio and tv) is based on the same patterns - once you learn the theory you get surprised that people still continue composing songs without repeating (at least not totally and obviously).

Good research. I personally definitely get the same mood from the melody itself, albeit a completely other genre and instrument use.

Speaking of the repeated patterns of western music, I always love to share this little gem:
Axis of Awesome - 4 Chord Song

leonbloy: I must say your guitar goes hand-in-hand with Ghibli - I'm always a sucker for acoustic covers
