I've heard 2019 at the earliest, but that was back when it was supposed to be Boro (IMDB had a 2019 page for Boro). Toshio Suzuki said he wanted to have it out before the 2020 Olympics, but even that seems unlikely at this point. Maybe 2021.

I imagine it's taking a while for the Ghibli production team to get back in operation since it's been sitting dormant for 3 years. And since this is another "final film" for Miyazaki, he probably feels no pressure to get it done immediately. In an interview he joked he might even die during production. Suzuki laughed and said "Then it's sure to be a hit!"

Rather than dormant, I imagine that the Ghibli 'team' has scattered and been working for other studios and it is that which may be taking so long to assemble tham together again.

Yeah that's probably true. I know a lot of them also went to Studio Ponoc.

I remember reading a few months ago that Miyazaki had to put out an ad or something seeking new animators to work on the film. Ghibli has just been in disarray since his latest "retirement" it seems.

In the video on the previous page, it was suggested that before the Tokyo Olympics seems unlikely. Then again, since news on it is so sporadic, it's hard to judge how far ahead they may be with preparations.

ghibli is in disarray because they like it that way. many members here share the same feeling that cash-cowing is not cool. secondly they only make for japanese audience it does not make any sense as the market is too little for animation of that quality. they are old school and i dislike ghibli for that

I think that by now, Ghibli knows that they have a world-wide market. Even if they initially produce a film for the Japanese market, they know that it will eventually air globally.

I passes a book shop today and they had a display of the book. I only noticed it in passing so I didn't see what the sign said, but considering the timing, I figured there was probably a connection. Even if it is a popular book already, that alone doesn't explain a sudden display for an old novel.

I'd consider reading it if it weren't for the fact that I know it'll take me forever.

I don't understand how the Boro lenght feature rumour started.
It was very clear in the Boro TV special that Miyazaki was working in something TOTALLY DIFFERENT to Boro.

It might not be big news but it is interesting. Now we know that the film isn't actually an adaptation of the book, but rather the book is just a theme in the film. So it really opens up the possibilities of what the film could be like!

So as the last piece of news indicated, it's not a direct adaptation. I do think this makes it more intriguing.

I think so too. The other interesting point in this is that Miyazaki is the protagonist of the movie. This was not much yet again, so until we get to know the plot - or synopsis - of the film, I guess we have to scrape by with these.

It has been a while, so does anyone have any further information on the release of this 'new movie'...?

the latest news seems to be that ghibli works not on 1, but on 2 new movies (2nd supposedly is by Goro)

Vincent Maraval is "the founder of the production company Wild Bunch (which has frequently collaborated with Ghibli)" so high chance he really does know what he's tweeting about.

Here's some more about it: https://www.slashfilm.com/new-studio-ghi...-goro-miyazaki/

This was in January though, and it doesn't sound like any more information has emerged since.
