Since we haven't had a new thread like this in a long time, I thought this might be fun! We've probably all rated our favourite Ghibli films before, but time has passed and our preferences may have changed, especially if we've rewatched some of them in the meantime!

Of course, ranking everything perfectly in order can make it very hard to choose, so this time let's give everything a grade, something like this:
A - the best
B- very good
C- good
D - decent
E - not so good
(It doesn't need to be exactly like that - basically the ones you like most are at the top and the ones you like least are at the bottom )

So here's my own list:
A: Spirited Away, Whisper of the Heart, Kaguya-hime
B: Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, Laputa, Kaze Tachinu
C: Kiki's Delivery Service, Nausicaa, My Neighbour Totoro, Only Yesterday, Marnie
D: My Neighbours the Yamadas, Porco Rosso, Pom Poko, Poppy Hill, Howl's Moving Castle
E: Arrietty, Gedo Senki, The Cat Returns

Obviously I only included what I've seen, so Ocean Waves, Castle of Cagliostro and Ponyo aren't there.

it's hard for me to reliably grade a dozen of ghibli movies, and even more so to grade the whole anime landscape. I even wrote a script to help me do that but, even computer-aided like that, it was ridiculously slow and likely unreliable process.

so when people talk about their favorite movies after they gave it less than 10 hours of non-stop thinking, it's hard to take them seriously. at best, their "top 10" is the list of movies that each caused some sort of strong emotion.

I myself don't have the ability to concentrate for that long, just thinking about movies. But perhaps I could go beyond from just ranking by the amount of emotional response I have gotten from a ghibli-movie. Reasoning based on what I like actually sounds appealing to me.

I will see if I can rewatch the movies I have in my shelf, and I'll reply if this project succeeds

Honestly, I haven't watched any of them in quite a while. That's why my "unwatched" titles are exactly the same as they were years ago. Anyway, the idea of the grading categories is to make things a little easier.

I have a same type of situation: no good reason to avoid watching the rest of them. (Except I've wanted to avoid watching Omoide Poroporo until I'm near thirty, but that's just something I came up in high school )

On some of these it's been several years since I saw them, but here is an attempt.

A: Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Princess Kaguya
B: Howl's Moving Castle, Totoro, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Arriety
C: Wind Rises, Poppy Hill
D: Kiki, Porco Rosso, Only Yesterday, Ponyo, Castle of Cagliostro
E: ...

To be honest I think even the weakest Ghibli's are still decent.

Coming soon (hopefully): The Cat Returns, Yamadas, Marnie, Whisper of the Heart, Pom Poko, Fireflies, Earthsea

I made a list of the movies that I've seen and went over the list a number of times, making changes each times as I thought the movies over and my memories of them.

The movies are not in any particular order in each of the categories...

A: The Best:
"Whisper of the Heart"; "Ocean Waves"; "Princess Mononoke"; "Spirited Away".

B: Very Good:
"Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind"; "Kiki's Delivery Service"; "Only Yesterday"; "Howl's Moving Castle"; "Up on Poppy Hill"; "When Marnie Was There"; "My Neighbor Totoro"; "Grave of the Fireflies"
(This last one I've seen once and it affected me so much, given that the ages of the two main characters so closely fit my sister and myself, that I do not want to watch it again).

C: Good:
"Castle in the Sky"; "Porco Rosso"; "My Neighbors, the Yamadas"; "The Cat Returns"; "Ponyo"; "The Wind Also Rises"; "Princess Kaguya".

D: Decent:
"Pom Poko"; "Arrietty"; "Tales of Earthsea".

E: Not as good: (Although, ALL Ghibli;s are good, IMO)
"Goshi the Cellist"; "Castle of Cagliostro"; "On Your Mark".

I've also seen other films by Ghibli artists: "Heidi"; Horusi, Prince of the Sun"; "Puss in Boots" and a number of other 'Ghibli's'...

This is my list, such as it is... and subject to change at a moment's notice, lol...

I would also agree that I like even the films in the bottom category. Relatively I'd say they're weak though.
