I never got into Fruits Basket, but I did see this news. I guess there must be a decent market for revivals of older series! It seems to happen quite a bit these days.

Nearly hit the ceiling when I saw this the other day, I'm so excited!! Fruits Basket really has a special place in my heart.

It seems they're planning to animate the entire manga too, it's been announced as a 全編アニメ化, 'all volumes anime adaptation'. I wonder how long it's going to be. I think they got through 5-6 volumes in the original 26-episode series.

I just get more stoked the more I think of it, I'm going to see my favourite boys again after all these years! Hatoriii~~!

Good news. I enjoyed the original.

It certainly will be interesting to see the old-school anime style updated to a modern format.

How faithful was the original adaptation? As I said, I never got into it, but I wonder if it's a case like Sailor Moon, where they want the new series to be closer to the source manga.

I didn't read the manga - I think Husky and Kaz did.

Yes, this seems to be the trend with these re-adaptations like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brother and the new Sailor Moon - this new series of Fruits Basket is to be made closer to the manga.

I'm currently on episode 5 and I have mixed feelings.

It is good and I am enjoying it a lot. But... (you knew it was coming)

It's just... not quite living up to the excitement I had for it. Loving the old series as much as I do, I'm very aware of the different and the little places this new adaptation is falling down in - the soundtrack is a big one. The original series' soundtrack was very quirky, unique, and was very good at producing sudden moments of tension and melancholy, as well as fun. The new series' soundtrack feels so pastel in comparison; most of the time I don't even notice it, and it's rather deadening the emotional impact of some scenes.

A lot of the more cartoonish, over-the-top bits of comedy have been taken away. I miss that.

I was initially really pleased that they managed to get almost the entire English dub cast back, because I watched the original series in dub. But inevitably, sadly, you can hear the age in their voices. It's been more than fifteen years, after all, and most of them have outgrown their characters, they don't sound believable as teenagers anymore. So, I'm watching with subs (the Japanese cast has been entirely replaced as per the wishes of the mangaka).

What I'm hoping is that once the story starts moving into parts of the manga that the original series didn't cover, I'll start to enjoy it more. My nostalgia for the old series is definitely in the way at the moment.

AHA!!! You're getting older Kaz, lol... And you too, arren...

I am not sure if I ever read the Manga, but I have two copies of the Anime Original and it surprised me... one, that I liked it as much as I did and two, that I erred and ordered a second copy, forgetting that I had one already... (be quiet about the age thingy, lol) That happened a lot of years ago...

Now what were we talking about again??? lol Later, Gators...

Having left it alone for a while, I watched episodes 8-13 over today and yesterday and loved them. I think I'm managing to let go of some of the baggage I brought from being a fan of the original adaptation.

I still think the soundtrack lacks flavor, but these last few episodes have had plenty of the silly humour I felt was a little missing to begin with. There have been some really precious moments as well.

If it's what I think it is, the next episode will be a test of how well they can manage some more emotional material. They fell flat for me once already with Spoiler!, highlight to read.

Hatori's backstory. The original never failed to have me in tears, but it didn't really hit me like that this time. Next should be Momiji's story.
