This is an idea I had quite some time ago, but I want to do a little tournament of Ghibli films, a bit like some of the "favourite Ghibli" games we've had before. When I mentioned it in the past, somebody (Saddles maybe?) said this would be like a "Ghibli world cup", and essentially, that's right. It'll be a tournament beginning with a group round followed by knockout polls, a similar format to many major sport tournaments.

I've had this idea in mind for a while, thinking it should wait until there was more activity, but I can't just wait for ever, so I will go ahead and do this. My plan is for it to take place over a few weeks next month (January 2019). Everyone would of course be welcome to encourage others to participate. Ideally I'd like for this to become an annual activity.

I'll post more details about how it will work later. Until then, any questions or comments?

Neat idea, I'll be up for it.

Some more details!

23 Ghibli titles (including Nausicaa and Lupin III) will be sorted into four groups based on their rankings. The only exception is that there will also be a "host", like in a real-life sport tournament. The host will get to be in the smallest group, and will be sorted as a top seed. Hopefully this will make the groups more interesting.

The voting in the group stage will take the form of putting them in order of preference - with two rounds to allow for tactical voting if you so choose. The top two in each group will continue to quarter finals, which will be regular one-on-one polls. I'll take the result at a set time, and the winners will go on to semi finals, and from there to the final.

If we do it again the next year (and I hope we can!), then I think I might streamline it by having a qualifying round first. However, I want to have everything participating the first time, as it might end up being the only time.

From beginning to end, it should take about three weeks. I'm thinking of starting it in the middle of January. I think I'll make a separate forum section for it, but I still need to play around with the software to see how that will work out.

Sorry for the big info dump! If you have any questions, please ask.

I've realised that posts in the cup sub-section don't show up as newest posts for the board overall. So this post is just to point people to that section! Look and see the groups!

As mentioned in the voting rules post, I'm thinking of making a special tiebreaker rule for the final.

It would be very anticlimactic if the final is decided on previous results, so I have some options. If the scores are even when the poll closes, I could reopen the poll for a set time, and then the result is checked again at the end of that.

Otherwise, I could open the thread to posts, and the first person to post their preference has the deciding vote.

Which of those would be best? I'm also open to suggestions if you have a better tiebreaker idea.

Since nobody has expressed any opinions about it, I'll make an executive decision and go with the second method.

Reopening the poll would look better, since there wouldn't be additional posts, but there's a danger that everyone who wants to vote will have already voted, so then nobody would actually be able to break the tie.

I'll update the rules in the main thread.
