Original Mononoke Storyboards Translated into English!Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by E_Hakki Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

Hi everyone,
I've been working on translating this for about 2 weeks now and have finally finished ^_^. I'd love to hear your feedback, particularly any errors that you might have picked up. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'm always eager to make corrections -in fact I originally began to read it with a simple 'google translate', but found it unbearable so I started to examine the syntax and put my limited french to some use -and so a project was born.

To be honest it wasn't a very difficult task since it involved no real editting of the image itself, although the french translation was at times tedious to translate. Thats partly why I've included the script, complete with the 'google translate' that I needed to work with. Also included is some interesting trivia I picked up and you may be able to spot more.

Special Thanks to...

- www.buta-connection.net (one of the best Ghibli sites around), which provided me with the scans.
- My Sister, for reading through it.

Well, here it is - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=K8A2YGU6

Enjoy!

P.S - If the link dies then let me know, I'll be sure to reupload it.

Even though I already have the Japanese book and already have an English translation, you did a really great job! It'll make it accesable for more Ghibli fans! Thanks for taking the time!!!

P.S.: If you like E_Hakki's translation, please buy the book! It's a nice and really largly sized hard cover book.

Thanks Wushu!

Of course you're right, if you like it you should buy it. I got a hold of the original and as nice as the scanlations are, they can't really do justice to the real thing -which is a lot bigger and better in quality.

Thanks a lot for all the work into the translation. Your effort is certainly much appreicated by many of us who have no access to the book or being Japanese-illiterated.

On the story, it is interesting that there are quite many traces of the Mononoke era and the Yuya in Spirited Away. The cat-like monster is pretty cute too, and maybe is a distant relative of our much loved catbus. The plot isn't all that original, and the drawing is not as impressive as other Miyazaki works (these are imageboards after all). The story as a whole is entertaining nonetheless.

Anyway please keep up with the good work. I look forward to your next translation project!

Haha, thanks...all your kind words are appreciated too. I hope that all Miyazaki mangas are made available in English, just like his movies -preferably through professional companies like Viz.

Concerning the story itself, it is certainly quite unusual -but I too can see why this was rejected (I prefer the latter Princess Mononoke ^_^).

Over the next month I'll be very busy, but I am interested in doing more translations. I do not know Japanese so I my only option is to work on French translations already available (and they do seem to be very dedicated to pre-Ghibli material, with recent theatrical releases such as a dubbed Jarinko Chie). In fact my French is also very poor, but at least I have a basic understanding to guide me.

If someone would provide me with scans of 'Imouto He' ('To my Sister'), I could easily do that since Nausicaa.com already have an english translation for it. Quite a few 'My Neighbours the Yamadas' newspaper strips are also available in french, which I might do when I find the time.

People love Miyazaki works, but don't think about Miyazaki's Copyright.
The work of Miyazaki suffers a large amount of damage from an illegal copy every year.

I don't think thats very fair.

1) These storyboards will most probably never be 'officially' translated into English so whats wrong with making it more accessible to non-Japanese speaking Ghibli fans?
2) Many books are never actually purchased since people are free to borrow them from a local library-those who do buy it, wish to have a copy of there own. What I'm providing is no different a service since those with the will and means to buy it will do so anyway; especially since scans are of inferior quality compared to the original A3 images.
3) These storyboards are pretty rare now and near impossible to buy without the use of a credit card. Its probably even out of print.

Hi Megu, こんにちは

Everyone of us here do love the works by Miyazaki very much, and I second your point that Ghibli has been adversely affected by illegal stuff like bootlegs. For scanlations, however, there is room for argument and you cannot simply classify it into black or white like treating bootlegs. Before proceeding, I would like to clarify that I am both a scanlator and a scanlation-reader.

Unlike illegal stuff you can find in ebay, scanlations are not made from the attempt of depriving the copyright holders of their prospective income. I presume, among all countries in the world, manga is the most accessible in your country. But you cannot assume everyone's accessibility to manga is the same as you, or everyone in the world can speak Japanese.

What we translators and scanlators are doing is to help manga to touch a wider group of people over the world, by presenting these works to the prospective readers in a format that they can access, understand and appreciate. The reason that we spend all the time and effort in buying manga and translating them is purely our own passion towards the works we love, instead of any plan of making money out of them like the ebay bootleggers. We have a sincere hope that everyone who enjoy the scanlations will take the hassle to import them into their own countries.

I, for one, would never be interested in manga like Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (ヨコハマ買い出し紀行) had I never read the scanlations. This is quite an obscure title that I had no idea of its existence prior to my scanlation-reading expereince. Even if I had heard of it, slice-of-life stuff was seldom my cup of tea and I would not give a damn about it. Yet the well-translated scans made me fall in love with this fine piece of work, and my passion justified me to dish out all the money for the costs, shipment charges, import duties, and miscellaneous fees for all 13 volumes. In the whole process, the mangaka gained financially, and both the scanlators and myself were happy about it.

I am sure that you can find many positive examples like myself among all the overseas manga fans. Indeed, I think scanlations have a significant role in contributing to manga's worldwide success, especially in areas that start to have licensed manga for sale, due to the market demand from readers who were introduced to manga through scanlations.

For the sake of argument, let me make up a scenario. Assume that I found YKK a piece of crap and decided to forget about it after reading chapter one. Did anyone lose? No. I originally would not buy the manga, and the situation was still the same, so no lose of prospective income on the mangaka's part. The scanlators took all the time and effort in releasing the scanlations, but my unsatisfied expereince would not deprive the other perspective readers of accessing, understanding and appreciating them. Driven by their passion and the support of the YKK fans, the scanlators would still continue their work. As for me, I haven't paid a cent so no harm done.

All in all, I would not readily say that scanlations are a win-win solution to regional barriers that inhibit manga's worldwide blossoming. But at the very least they are not as detrimental as you assume them to be. Despite of their somewhat questionable nature, I think scanlations do have their value of existence and I recognize their contributions in widening the international manga-reader base. Please do not dismiss scanlations automatically, and try to examine it in a more careful and respecting manner from different perspectives. There is always a zone of grey between black and white, and everyone's idea of black and white is not necessarily the same.

P.S. Though your message did not specify that you are explicitly against scanlations, I presume that you are from its context and its apparent tone of sarcasm. My apologies if I have made a mistake. ((∩_∩;; ))

My pleasure Haru. Coincidently, I just found another translation (almost hidden) on Nausicaa.com. You can read it here -http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/books/mh/mononoke80.html

It was done by two people who translated it directly from Japanese so perhaps its more accurate. I quickly skimmed through some of it and a few panels seem more appropriate, although I don't think Mononoke is supposed to be a 'lion'. It should be 'mountain cat'. Therefore, both translations have there errors so it might be nice to use both.

The purpose of scanlations may differ from group to group, in general it is simply to bring a non-translated manga to the masses with no knowledge of japanese.

While it is true that the mangaka will lose a bit through scanlations, take note that most scanlators will DROP the series once it has been announced that it has been licensed for english release, meaning scanlations will be useless since an english release will be available anyway.

Also, like Jiji said, not everyone has the resources to get these mangas. In some parts of the world, anime and manga is unheard of, so you'll be hard pressed to get any of such stuff, and even less when that country is not listed under the money order scheme, and that particular person does not own a credit card.

And no, it does not sound too far-fetched. Think India, for instance. And yet there are quite a number of otakus there.

What we CAN do is to support the original authors and try to get the original where possible. I for one actually own the ghibli mangas (both Mimi volumes, Neko AND Mononoke picture book). But that's because I have access to Kinokuniya, an international japanese bookstore chain, and I actually have cash to spare, since these mangas are rather expensive.

hallo!

I have read megu's message about the violation of the copyright.I am of the same opinion, but not 100%.it is true that every comic in general maker loses money when someone downloads something but at the same time he gains.some reasons have already been mentioned.accessabillity is agreat one.i have the same problem and i buy as many i can afford but if i couldn't download some i wouldn't have bought as many i have already,so these downloads promote in a way their work especially outside japan where you have to order them from the comic bookstores and wait maybe for a month or more.or maybe they have few copies and you find for example only first issue the fourth and the eighth
oufcourse that's no excuse to download the entire manga or comic in general universe.

Sorry for necroposting, but anyone still have the file and be willing to reupload it? Sadly E_Hakki have been long inactive, his last post is around 2010.
It would be such a shame to let a translation of a valuable work like this be lost forever.
