  Translations you've witnessed that really could have been better.

I'm sure people here have watched a dub of a Japanese show that contained horrid voices and dialogue. Or a game with examples of grammar thats last the ages due to the quality of said grammar. Or just missing something in translation.

Well, this topic is based around examples of bad or at most mediocre translations of various materials. This isn't restricted to Japanese works either.

Aside from Wing Zero, a flawed one that comes to mind is Megaman X4's dub. From the infamous scene with Zero wondering what he's fighting for, to not pronouncing the word "coup" right, to X's voice, the game wasn't the best that could have been done with X4 as far as English voice acting could go.

(This probably belongs in the "other anime" subforum...)

X4 had voice-acting? I don't even remember... ^^||

Personally, I'm tired of hearing people say "I will destroy you" again and again. I mean, really? If they aren't going to say "kill", can't they at least come up with some more creative euphemisms?

The Jiji character in it's entirety in "Kiki's Delivery Service". The American dub made him into a wise-cracking cute animal sidekick, completely missing the point of what he was.

The Fruit Basket dub is pretty appauling. In general I think when they do the American dubs it doesn't come across with the originally intended message, so of course doesn't work.

I also once had a Digimon Nintendo game that had such appaulling grammar you weren't actually able to tell what was was being said. It was just bad.

hahaha, probably the worst one I have ever seen was the subtitles for a Ponyo DVD that I ordered when I was dying to just see the movie. I knew that when it was officially released for the US that I would get the proper one, but... aw well, you know what I mean...

anyway...

the English was so out of whack in translations that I turned off the subs... they made no sense to what was showing on the screen... I ranted about it at the time and dballred agreed and said that the subtitler didn't even know Japanese...

I actually prefer the sound in Japanese and the subs in English anyway... The emotions seem to come thru to me more...
