  Is it really animé?

First of all, hi I was looking around for a Ghibli site after falling in love with Howl's Moving Castle, and found your site, it's amazing! I'm hoping that you may be able to answer my question...

I know that animé originated in Japan, and Japanese films like Howl's Moving Castle would be called animé, but what about the new American clones like Yu-Gi-Oh! GX? I know that many are based on manga (including my example of Yu-Gi-Oh), but would you still call American works like these animé or just cartoons with Japanese inspiration?

Thanks in advance, though I daresay it's a ridiculous question, so sorry too...

I dislike american cartoons, I don't even refer to them as anime. Anime in my opinion is straight from Japan. Not Yu-Gi-Oh, Teen Titans, Jackie Chan Adventures, Puffy Amiyumi Show, Avatar the Last Airbender, not even those new, extremely retarded Pokemon shows. Anime is .HACK, Witch Hunter Robin, Full Metal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell, the older seasons of Digimon and Pokemon, etc etc...
There is a big difference between Anime and Cartoons.

Actually, I quite like "Avatar, the last air bender", even if it is made by Nickelodeon....

Anyway, I googled my query and found this;

http://www.honors.uiuc.edu/ealc15097/Hiten-Ivan/cartoons.htm

It sums up the differences between American cartoons and Japanese animé, but I suppose it's personal opinion wether they're one and the same. I'd say that the real Japanese animé is better than American cartoons in general.

Oh, and IluvHowl06? Thanks so much for complimenting the quotations, glad you liked them

In Japan, anime refers to animation. Which covers everything from GITS to YGH, to Snow White to Shrek.

Jus FYI to you guys.

Personally, what you call it is up to you. The important part is the content. Hell, I enjoy watching Teen Titans more than half the anime shown on Animax (on asian cable, like HBO).
