Posted by Jiji on 07.16.2005, 02:02 AM: After I had finished the whole story of Nausicaa, there was a strange and tight feeling (ready to explode? ) from my throat down to my chest: a mixture of being moved, stunned, amazed... And my head was filled with the questions and topics that were brought up in the story. It was the first time that I had such an experience after reading a book, let alone a manga. So that's how it became my all-time favourite, and how I got converted to the Miyazaki fandom.

I've only just realised that we humans have blue blood until it becomes oxygenated- look at the veins in your arms, amazing isn't it! Perhaps Nausicaa was not so different from the insects after all? what do you think?

Posted by Jiji on 08.02.2005, 01:26 AM: Umm... As far as I know deoxygenated blood in your veins is dark red, while the oxygenated blood in the arteries is bright red. The veins themselves are white in colour. But with the diffusion of light through your body and skin, and with the dark red stuff inside, they seem to be blue in colour. The red colour of the blood comes from the hemoglobin of the red blood cells. The iron in the hemoglobin changes its shape when bounded with oxygen molecule. This alters the frequency of light, and makes the blood more scarlet. (to put it simpler: rusted iron has a more red colour)

I was under the impression that blood before oxygenation was blue but when we bleed the reaction is so emmediate that as soon as the blood comes into contact with air it turns red. But...Hmm red blood cells are red aren't they..not blue...
