You can find information on the availabilty of DVDs which contain the Miyazaki/Takahata episodes of the First Lupin III series (eps 7-23) and Miyazaki's two episodes (145 and 155) of the Second Lupin III series, here: http://nausicaa.net/miyazaki/video/lupin/

Well, not really a recurring theme or character but more of a "is this character based on a real person?" kind of question:

Our friend Donald Curtis, in Porco Rosso. I'm pretty sure he is modelled on Howard Hughes:

As soon as I saw Porco Rosso for the first time I was convinced that elements of Howard Hughes' character and life were used as the basis of Donald Curtis' character. Facially they are similar but that's a tricky one as Miyazaki uses this Latin looking facial style with small weaselly moustache in several films - for example, one of the pirate family in Laputa is his twin brother, so the 'face' has been used before.

However:

1) Donald Curtis is an excellent pilot - as was Hughes.
2) Curtis is Italian/American, Hughes was Jewish/American.
3) Curtis tries to woo Gina away to America with ridiculous offers of fame and fortune - even hinting he might become President and she the First Lady - Hughes was infamous for capturing the hearts of many many women with outrageous offers and empty promises of fame and fortune.
4) Curtis later goes on to star in films - Hughes was a prolific film maker and producer, he made several aviator films and many westerns, of the type we see apparently depicted in the poster at the end of Porco Rosso
5) Curtis is an egotistical self-centred swine - as was Hughes.

So - see the connection? Am I warm? Has anyone else heard if Miyazaki based the Curtis character on parts of Howard Hughes character?

There are a lot of similarities, except Howard Hughes is way cooler and more of a romantiscist of Aviation than a racing pilot. Also, Hughes gets to shag Hepburn whilst Curtis got dumped by Gina.

Yeah, the first time I watched whisper of
the heart, I saw porco rosso on the clock.
People say I act exactly like Shizuku.
