  Paranioa Agent

Urh, ugnnn, gnggnnn, gasp, shudder, gulp.

Oh my gosh, is this good anime or is this good anime?

Oh, wow, oh brother, this may just be the best anime series I have ever seen.

To look at its just wonderful, simply beautiful characters and settings and lighting and directing. Very tight, very sharp, very witty.

Storyline - I'll come back to you on that. I've seen four episodes so far and its drawing me in like a rather sinister black hole. The first two eps seemed straightforward but ep 3 was particularly dark and harrowing (lots reminded me in that ep of Paprika - LOTS of similarities), ep 4 was even weirder and darker and very claustrophobic.

I'm still not sure quite whats going on but I'm sure as heck hooked on this one.

And lovely theme music! Especially the intro, what a great tune.

Yup, good description.

Its not about a boy with abaseball bat per se, although he plays a role, yes. Quite how much of a role I haven't yet found out. I don't yet even know who the Paranoia Agent *is* although it might be him.

Ep 5 which I watched last night reminded me a lot of Millenium Actrss too.

In that magazine listing you mentioned, what were the top 3 anime?

number two was Akira (i find this film disturbing)
number three was ghost in a shell the series'
4 was paranoinda angel or whatever
5 i think was neon genisis
6 spirited
7 was ghost in a shell movies
i cant remember

but tenchi muyo was 17

It not an agent like secret agent, more like agent in chemistry.

O yea saddle, welcome to the void. And have fun making head or tail or the show.

Did I mention how this show made a LARGE number of watchers quite literally tear their hair out? Not sure if it's still there, but if you can dig the archives of Anime-Kraze's forums (a fansub group), maybe you can find their discussions.

EDIT: Btw, "strange" is putting it mildly. Psychotic sounds better.

We need to do this series better justice. Hope more people sees this so we can get a better discussion.

Most anime is pretty strange!

So this series must be off the radar, by the sound of it?

WARNING SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!

I've just reached about Ep 9 (I think) about the suicide club and that was very very VERY disturbing, and sad as well, touching but in such a depressing way.

It spoke a lot about these internet 'suicide' groups who gather ostensibly to kill themselve sin joint pacts but really deep down they don't want to die they just want to live, they're crying out for human contact - so when 'Lil Slugger finds them and ignores them it's clear that they are not actually the hopeless cases that attract him.

Nicely done, quite an eye-opening take on that whole underground scene.

Its certainly the oddest and most compelling anime I've watched. Far odder than FLCL or SEL for example.

Pretty much, yeah. Messed up, more like. Should be, I mean the anime uses the ugly side of human behaviour to tell the story.

Definitely. I wouldn't want anyone under the age of 18 watching this - not for reasons of nudity or bad language just that its a very disturbing series and deals openly with some very disturbing facets of human nature.

I'm quite aware of that which is why I mentioned it - and the "Paprika" parallels I mentioned earlier.

i read a segment about paprika in that same magazine and it is so strange and just freaky that someone acually thought "wow lets make a film about this"

but i supose that the film is about recording dreams so i guese my dreams are as disturbing anyway

Hm, there are a few images from "Paprika" that will stay with me for a very long time. Not that they were nasty or perverted just that they were so uncannily like the things that happen in real dreams.

I finished watching it a day or two ago and the ending is as good as the rest of it although a little 'apocalyptic' in the way many anime are.

But this one left me less puzzled than Serial Experiments Lain did. Maybe that's because Lain specialised in leaving deliberate red herrings all over the place just for the fun of provoking and confusing the viewer. But the end of Agent semed to me to make sense and the parts that I couldn't work out didn't bother me as I was content to go with the flow of it by then. Certainly a more satisfying show than Lain.

And the artwork might just be the best I've seen in any anime TV series, its movie quality in many places.

I think this would be an excellent one for the anime club to watch.

I really liked Paranoia agent. I think people should be warned that there are some pretty dark crimes the viewer is faced with in some episodes. If you are easily offended or lead a sheltered life you may want to skip this one.

Is it just me or is Satoshi Kon's music addictive. The beginning and the end songs in Paranoia agent hit some kind of pleasure center in my brain and I want to cry went it stops

Posted by Saddletank on 08.02.2007, 06:33 AM:

Agreed, the opening theme tune is wonderful. Often when I'm watching a series I'll skip the OP after 2 or 3 times but this one I watched every time, sometimes rewinding and watching again. Not only is the music fantastic but the images make you sit up and gawp at the screen too. I just love the characters faces, I think I'm in love with Tsukiko Sagi, she's so cute. She's one of these weak lonely vulnerable hurting women that bring out the protective person in me.

Closing theme also very god, very thought provoking images too.

I'm not sure if you guys notice that the opening itself has equal thought-provoking values as the series.

Watch it again. And observe. Hint: Try to imagine a NORMAL situation where that person would be caught in that background. The smiles and laughter have a point themselves too.

Yeah, all the situations are adverse, places where a person would normally not be laughing. I liked that, in fact that was one of the things that really made me sit up and WATCH the OP, I wondered first time why they were laughing and eventually saw the link that all their situations are either involving death, near death or destitution.

The connected circle of bodies with Maromi in it's centre at the ending was a teaser too, but placing Maromi there was rather a big spolier unfortunately since it made me pay special attention to the Tsukiko character when she reappeared towards the middle of the series. Itwa sclear that she (and Maromi particularly) were going to be significant.

But yeah, there's not realy a frame that is wise discarding as you watch this. Pretty much everything is significant, like the background TV and radio chatter on Evangelion - listen to that and you find out the chatter while apparently shallow is linked to the conversations the characters are having, its such a nicely done effort.

You missed the main point of the ending. So did I, until a friend pointed it out to me.

The characters aren't lying around in a random circle. They form a question mark.

I tell you, one man can only see so much. It'll take an entire forum to fully dismantle this artwork of a series.
