However, it wasn't until 1934 that Japan expanded its whaling to Antarctica. Whales helped keep Japanese citizens fed both during and after World War 2. In 1947 whale meat made up almost half of all animal protein consumed by the country. Nearly 20 years later, whales continued to make up nearly one-quarter of the Japanese diet.

Posted by arren18 on 04.21.2015, 09:30 AM: It's definitely a complicated issue, and one where different countries are held to different standard. But I'm wondering where you got this from? Especially for the part in bold I would be very interested in seeing some kind of source.
|
Posted by Saddletank on 04.21.2015, 11:00 AM: A significant percentage of the Japanese diet/food industry comprises seafood of one kind or another. I don't understand the need to hunt whales when there are other abundant forms of aquatic life.

Posted by saviour2012 on 04.21.2015, 11:35 AM: if you guys[i dont know about arren] are suspicious thats very illogical cause i did not ever wrote here anything without solid proof[unless that is a personal opinion][i dont know why even knowing that you guys do this, you could just say can we get the details please, which is basically the same thing][however i forgive you]

Posted by arren18 on 04.21.2015, 12:44 PM: I think it's natural to be a little suspicious about such huge numbers without an explanation of where they came from. I wasn't wanting to argue about it though - I genuinely wanted to see this information.

Posted by husky51 on 04.21.2015, 01:15 PM: I recently, well, last year, saw a documentary about pilot whale hunting in, I believe, the Faroes Islands??? It was explained that with no other viable animal protein available to the islanders, this was something that was developed to cover that lack. Importing meats from outside the Islands was simply too expensive.

Posted by arren18 on 04.21.2015, 03:04 PM: I think you're quite right! That kind of dangerous, even violent behaviour is not okay. An issue I have with very radical animal rights groups like these is that in their pursuit of protecting animal life they seem to have forgotten about human life.
