Posted by SugarCubes on 03.18.2014, 04:50 PM: Is the Secret World of Arrietty ever going to have a sequel? As an avid fan of the Borrowers, I was just curious. The Secret World of Arrietty (Also known as The Borrower Arrietty or Arrietty) is based on the Borrowers, which is a series, and after seeing the movie, I was wondering if they were going to continue Arrietty with a sequel and continuing on with the books.

I haven't heard any talk of a sequel and Miyazaki/Ghibli are famous for not doing sequels of any kind, unlike many American and British animated movie companies which like to milk a franchise for every penny in it. Miyazaki has always said he prefers to put his energy into a new project rather than add to an old one.

Posted by arren18 on 03.19.2014, 10:00 PM: I'd say it's very unlikely. It was by a new director and they don't generally do sequels, so I'd be surprised. Sorry about that!

However, comparatively speaking, I think Arrietty is more likely to receive a sequel than any other Ghibli movie. I say that because: (1) Arrietty was a huge hit in Japan, and made even more money than Kaze Tachinu internationally, (2) lately Ghibli has been kind of on the rocks financially, and (3) Miyazaki and Takahata are both probably retired for good now.

Posted by Saddletank on 03.20.2014, 08:23 AM: Those are good points Orphic. I had forgotten that the 'no sequels' policy was a personal issue for Miyazaki. When he hands his company over to younger directors we may see changes in all kinds of ways.

Posted by Saddletank on 03.20.2014, 11:14 AM: They weren't theatre releases though, they were shorts. I think the original question was about another full length Arietty/Borrowers sequel, not a short.

Posted by arren18 on 03.21.2014, 12:11 PM: Yeah, those examples aren't really sequels in the same way. Ghiblies is just a short thing, and I'd say Mei and the Kitten Bus is more of a spin-off really, since its format is different.

Posted by carly28 on 04.25.2014, 03:51 PM: Is there any where I can get mei & the kitten bus? X
|
Posted by husky51 on 04.25.2014, 07:38 PM: At this time, no... It is one of the shorts that were made strictly for showing in the Ghibli Museum and then only one a day is shown, I have been told. You would have to go multiple times to see them all.
|
Posted by arren18 on 04.26.2014, 12:47 AM: Husky is correct. Even at the Ghibli Museum, there's no way of seeing the other shorts apart from the one you get to see that day. I found that frustrating because I want to be able to see them all and hoped there'd be a DVD or something.
