I'm not sure if anyone has ever pointed this out, but here it goes. Totoro has a lot to do with Miyazaki's childhood and his experience with his mother having tuberculosis. I just watched the movie again, and the final words spoken in it are "for mommy." Seems like this line applies not only to the context of Mei and Satsuke, but also serves as a way of dedicating the film to his mother. Such a beautiful moment!
