That 3D though, I just can't get used to the style. Ever since I saw it on Korurenbo and Freedom, I never could get used to the freaky smiles.

@roar

have you seen The Sky Crawlers by osshi. its CGI is great.
The western and asian 3D or CGI[may or may not be 3D] style is different. In west CGI is about making things smooth, soft, cuddly and something cute where in asia it is shiny, sharp,stylish, metallic, rough and something hardcore along the line.

The 3D game is a quite different genre, which has resemblance of the asian style.

Sky Crawlers is a very good example of well done anime CGI. The characters are 2D though but the switch from CGI 3D air combat scenes to the personal interactions between the pilots off duty was probably a deliberate decision.

On top of that it's a fantastic story as well.

There have been less successful asian CGI works though, which seem to mimic the 'smooth and cuddly' western styles. Vexile was a visual failure in that category I think (the characters at least) and I always disliked the 3D faces in the Final Fantasy films. It just seems wrong to take a traditional 2D art style and try to directly convert it to 3D. The spiky hair for example is complete fail because its not a realistic depiction of hair to begin with and in 3D CGI it just looks odd.

This trailer though looked great to me. I didn't even notice the character was 3D CGI, she looks 'normal' to me.

Here's a preview for the show, which begins airing very soon. The backgrounds look great but the CG is a little unnatural and kinda comes across looking like a videogame. It doesn't give away much of a story, and I expect it'll be fairly episodic.

Hmmm... those 3D faces are a bit disturbing, very plasticky. I suppose you'd get used to it after a few eps though. I agree other artwork is amazing.

I think that I would enjoy the story... and as you say, we'd get used to the CGI after a bit...

While the 3D characters can be a bit off, it's certainly some of the smoothest 3D I've seen in anime.

I liked the first ep! It was unexpectedly funny... as in, I'm not entirely sure why I was amused, but I was. Will watch more. And hey, we should anime club this.

I didn't like Goro's movies for Ghibli, but this started quite well.

Anyone know if this film has an official DVD or Blu-ray release with English subtitles? I only have found bootlegs, so far...
