  Studio Ghibli Tournament

So, now that the elimination game is over, here's my idea for another game to rank the Ghibli movies! While the first game was liable to be affected by less serious voting, and ones that not many have seen were somewhat favoured, this one will have them go head-to-head. Basically, I'm curious to see how different a result this format will have.

There will be six groups - four of 4 and two of 3. In the first stage, two will progress from each group after voting. I assumed we would use polls, but maybe the first stage could have a different voting system to reduce the number of threads.

After that, winners and runners-up of different groups will face each other, and winners will progress, until we reach the final. I've already thought of a solution to the problem of having six match-ups in the second round. These later rounds would all be done by normal polls.

I was going to make the top six from the elimination game "seeded" so that each group will have one and - in theory - avoid any groups containing too many popular titles. I also thought the rankings in that game could be used to break ties on points so we don't have to have separate voting in those cases.

Anyway, should we do this soon? I'm really interested to see what kind of result we'll get from it.

Sounds like a fun idea, arren. By the way, have you considered using a double-elimination format? It would lengthen the time required, but is good at reducing randomness/bad luck factors.

Double elimination? I'm not sure what that entails. Could you explain it please?

As for randomness and bad luck, I recognise that this format will have its faults (for example: two popular choices face each other early on and a strong title gets put out early) but because both this and the elimination have different issues, I would be curious to see how the differences in faults affects the results. Anyway, if you can explain the format you mentioned, maybe I'll consider it.

A double elimination format basically has a winner's and losers bracket. When eliminated from the winner's bracket, the loser gets placed into the loser's bracket where he is pitted against other losers. Eventually the last remaining person in the winner's bracket faces the winner of the loser's bracket.

It basically serves to mitigate some of the luck involved since a candidate has to be beaten twice before being eliminated. It looks like this . There are sites online that automate the bracket tracking.

Thanks, Fen. You're not too far off husky, only I've been off playing them, not making them .

Just fiddling around, huh...lol

I need to start playing around with my guitar again... Definitely not stage material, but for my own amusement. from the "Birthday song" to Beethoven's "Ode to Joy"...

I have a bad right, fore-finger and it was always hard for me to chord and finger well, so I generally just settled for single-note melody. I have two full-size for me and one half-size that I used to play with at lunchtime at work. Now I let the grandkids play with it.

I've just moved into a new place and won't have internet (apart from the library, etc) until Friday, so please hold on until then. Soon after that we can start, if everybody's happy with that!

As I was going to use the poll threads that the Tavern has, I think double elimination would overcomplicate it. I still might use something a little different for the group stage, to reduce the number of threads and also allow a decent spread of votes since there are more options than in a head-to-head, but we'll see.
