  Visual Novels

Tell me I'm not the only one who is or has played one.

I'm currently playing through Higurashi, tis very interesting. Trying frantically to find a copy of Fate/Stay Night.

I thought visual novels were books with illustrations. Your posts implies they are computer games/stories.

A visual novel is kinda both at the same time. Eroge are a sub-branch of visual novels (fans would passionately disagree though). The idea is that a story, hence the term "novel", is told in a visual manner, where the picture fills the screen while blurbs of text generally fill a small box at the bottom of the screen. Hence, visual novel. Imagine a silent movie where, instead of moving pictures, you have pictures that change only periodically, and the text/dialogue is shown at the bottom of the screen instead of between scenes. If there's budget, you might even get VAs to voice the dialogues too.

"Girlfriend of Steel", the game I sent you that time, is an example of a visual novel. More famous examples include anything from Key (Clannad, Air, Kanon, etc), Type Moon (Tsukihime, Fate series, Garden of Sinners) and the Higurashi series.

Ah, okay. I seem to have been misunderstanding this for years. For example I have a pdf copy of Haruhi Suzumiya and that appears to have been a traditional paper-and-cover book. I understand the Monogatari series is the same.

How does one tell which it is if someone just talks of a visual novel?

Saddles, I think you've mixed it up with light novel. Haruhi and Monogatari are examples of light novels. Visual novels are, as explained, a type of computer game with limited gameplay and a focus on telling a set story.

It's an easy mistake to make!

As for me, VNs aren't really my thing. I've played Phoenix Wright, if you count that, and on my computer I have Hatoful Boyfriend, a dating sim parody featuring pigeons.

Garden of Sinners was actually a Light Novel, Roar. P.S. Speaking of Type/Moon, did you know that the guy who wrote Fate/Zero also wrote Madoka Magica? Yayness!

Oh yea forgot they did other media as well. Madoka was awesome except for the third movie.

Haven't seen Rebellion, loved the series. Is Rebellion at least semi-tolerable?

Going to have to thoroughly disagree with Roar and say it's great. It's not quite on a par with the series which is one of my favourites, but I honestly thought they did a fantastic job of making a sequel that was true to the feel of the original. However, I get the impression it's a bit of a love-it-or-hate-it deal.

I hear about this series a lot, perhaps I should watch it - what comprises the full Madoka Magica "story"?

The original series is twelve episodes long. I don't know how much you already know about it, so I'll avoid giving too much away and just say that it's a twist on the magical girl genre.

Beyond that, there are two recap movies, which slightly condense the series to set up for the third movie, a sequel. I would say that none of them are essential for enjoying the overall story, but the sequel movie is in my opinion very good.

The build up to the series ending was spectacular in itself, so much so that it made Rebellion look like a bad attempt at a sequel.

Back to topic, Insani is a good place to start out. I recommend Red Shift for a quick intro to what VNs are because of how short it is. Otherwise, I recommend Narcissu for its strong story.
