the wind rises dvd copy, faulty??

Hi,

My name is Sophie, I know this is just a fan site but I'd like to ask you all something. I bought a copy of the wind rises today, that is in both Japanese and English, when i put it on to play it just came up with lined drawings and partially water coloured, like you would see from early work on the film... what should i do? I've thought to return it but I feel i should contact someone about it or something, and I've thought to email studio ghibli.... but i can't write in Japanese at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

First of ll, I'd take it back to the store you bought it from... and either ask for your money back or get a replacement DVD. As far as having to write in Japanese, I wouldn't worry about it. English is spoken quite a bit over there, I understand. Even the best manufacturers get a lemon once in a while... or someone sold you a pirated DVD.

The lined drawings and partial watercolors in a bit confusing, tho...

Hi Scarlet and welcome to the Tavern - you should try to stay around, we're a friendly bunch. Yes, we've just fans here but some members are extremely knowledgeable and I'm sure more will try to help.

What country are you in?

I ask because I am not sure The Wind Rises has been officially released on DVD yet in some countries so my first fear is you've been sold a pirated copy. When you say it's in English do you mean there are English subtitles?

If you are certain its an official release then my next thought is you've accessed a section on the DVD that could be a 'making of' type documentary that shows early artwork. Or a companion track to the main feature that also shows pre-production artwork. I've seen similar tracks on other anime movie DVDs.

Have you skipped chapters through the DVD and is it like that all the way through?

Are you confident that you've navigated to the Main Feature track in the main menu?

I live in England, and I got it from a supermarket near me.

when I went to watch it I made sure to play the main feature. When I say English I mean literally dubbed in English, not just subtitles.

I checked through the whole film, it was the same the whole way through, and I had a look online at the film, they have the same words but mine is seriously just partially drawn, hardly coloured in much throughout.

And thank you for the help.

I'm in England as well.

I'm sorry, you have been sold a pirated copy as it has not been released anywhere on DVD yet.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wind_Rises

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Wind-Rises-H...i/dp/B00HWTU4Z8

http://www.ondvdreleases.com/1934-the-wi...lease-date.html

You've got two options - take it back to the supermarket you bought it from and demand your money back - you won't need a receipt since you can prove to them via the above links that its an illegal copy (I am very interested in which store this was bought and where, I'd be extremely surprised if it's a well-known high street name).

Second option is to contact these people:

http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/fraud_p...unterfeit_goods

Or

http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/a...erfeit-products

And they will give you advice. It would be good to get this shop fined and their pirated copies impounded.

Good luck!

I've come to realise this is the storyboard version of it so to speak, but when making sure to play it normally it still just comes up with the storyboard mode really

Although now I have just found that if you follow the extras and to actually watch it on storyboard mode it tells you to press something on the DVD remote to be able to watch it as a normal feature... so I've figured it out haha, now I feel embarrassed.

But thank you soo much for your help

It's from Tesco, surely it can't be pirated. It was released in the UK in May.
I guess I'm just going to have to try and look at every little aspect on a DVD from now on so that this doesn't happen again.

I apologize, Scarletlovex, for not Welcoming you to the Tavern. I was thinking about your problem and forgot to do so.

We all hope you will stick around and enjoy the site...

Again, Welcome!

DVDs don't normally play the extras as default. Try asking if the store has their own DVD player and play it there. If the same problem crops up, ask for a replacement.

Wait, it is out on DVD in England. I know this because of instagram. lol

Were there two discs?

I had similar problems with my Howl's Moving Castle and The Cat Returns DVDs. TCR had a lot of problems (skipping trailers and the main menu, among other problems). Somehow, it sorted itself out after a couple plays. My HMC one skipped scenes the first few times but fixed itself out. It's probably just minor problems.

Hey, congrats, FFF... You're over the 7,000 post mark...

Dunno tho, seems like you talk more than that....

Well, it's definitely out in Japan! I know because I've seen it.

And yeah, if you bought it in Tesco it won't be pirated because they have products they sell in all branches. If they had a pirate copy in one they'd have to have it everywhere else, and that would not happen.

It seems likely to me that whoever updated the Wikipedia page is concerned only about North American releases.

Sorry about my incorrect comments. Amazon.co.uk still does not have it available apparently (in the UK). Odd.

And yes, you'd be fine with any DVD bought in Tescos.

Also - I loathe how US-centric Wikipedia has become. Practically every artilcle about movies or TV shows has to have a comment about when its released in the USA with no news on other world releases. I wish Wiki would put a stop to that imbalance.

One thing I've learned about Wiki is that things can be added or corrected by outsiders... I have done so myself...

Seiji - so what is this then?

I went to Amazon UK, searched for "The Wind Rises DVD" and got this page:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Wind-Rises-H...i/dp/B00HWTU4Z8

I'm perplexed that you got a different link!
