My Navy ship was homeported in Yokosuka for almost 2 years, but this was back in '65-67, and The Ghibli Museum wasn't even built yet, I don't believe... I totally enjoyed my time over there... My stepdad was on the same ship and because of his rate, my Mom, Sister and the family Mustang were all there as well... I even had a military Japanese Dr License... Interesting experience...

Posted by Kazegami on 02.13.2022, 11:09 AM: I just realised, Koda, we were in Japan at the same time, haha! I flew out in late August 2016 to begin my year abroad. How was the 2019 trip? Where did you go?
Posted by husky51 on 02.13.2022, 11:26 AM: one memory I have happened the first time I went on liberty in Yokosuka... I was just wandering along Honcho Cho, the predominantly pedestrian street with wall-to-wall drinking places geared to the sailor with a pocket full of money, lol...

Posted by ButaPairotto on 02.14.2022, 08:45 AM: That's cool that many of you have been to Japan. I obviously would love to go to the Ghibli Museum. I heard back in the day you could actually go up into the studio and watch Miyazaki-San work. It's a life goal to shake his hand and maybe get a photo. Not sure If I'll get the chance but I would love that.

Posted by arren18 on 02.15.2022, 07:44 AM: Going from the top to the bottom sounds nice! Doing all of that in one trip seems a bit exhausting to me, but I do understand. I was actually living there, so I was in more of a position to take focused trips to particular areas, but even then I usually did quite a lot of stuff in each place.
Posted by ButaPairotto on 02.15.2022, 08:28 AM: Wow, that's very cool. How long did you live there for?
Posted by Kazegami on 02.15.2022, 09:40 AM: For nature, Yakushima might be a good shout. That's supposed to the place that inspired Princess Mononoke.
Posted by arren18 on 02.18.2022, 05:28 AM: I think going to maybe two different areas per week wouldn't be too much of a stretch, though I suppose you might want to spend longer in parts that interest you a lot.
