Hi people...
I got seriously virus'd, big time... I am using my son's computer right now and will not be able to go into the Tavern as often as I would like...
I was watching 'To Love Ru' on Youtube one evening last weeek and watched up thru ep 7, then had to sleep for work in the morning. The next day after work, I was looking for eps 8,9 and 10 which I had seen links to the previous night, but couldn't find them. I searched and found out that there are 25 eps. I found a list of sites on youtube that said we have all the eps, so I went there.
Big mistake!!!!!!
It was 'animepop' something as near as I can remember and I immediately started receiving many, many popups... as well as numerous popups warning aout privacy has been compromised... some legit sounding ads and some porn and I could not delete them nor shut the computer off, it just kept receiving more and more garbage.
I am going to talk to the computer guy at work and I hope that he can help me, otherwise it will be costing me some bucks... dang it!!!
In the meantime, I will not be able to go online as often as I wish...
I am just giving a cautionary notice to the Tavern members as I know that a number of us go to Youtube...
topic:
No HL, but definitely a big LL....
wish me luck...

man, one word: torrents.
Download, watch and delete or archive if you want, solves the problem.

I don't understand how anyone can watch any kind of visual media on youtube. The quality loss kind of drains the enjoyment.
husky, you will probably develop a mechanism to avoid these kind of sites. After a while it becomes painfully obvious when you hit upon a site that is just a bait-and-switch to put spyware or viruses on your computer.
Also, remember this rule: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
So many people have sent me emails saying "Hey, I found this website that has all episodes of every single anime in DVD quality free to watch".
My answer is always, "No, you haven't."

To be honest, that sounds more like adware than a virus problem. Of course, IMO the former is worse, so meh.
It's actually a rather simple problem to fix. Just follow these first few basic steps:
1) On another computer, download an anti-virus program, adware, program, spyware program, etc. I personally Use AVG, Adaware and Spybot, so you can use these as an example.
2) Disconnect your computer from the internet. Numero Uno rule.
3) Install these programs into your computer. Rest assured, updated patches are available for download, so you can manually update them without going online. Or you can take a gamble, your choice.
4) Boot up in Safe Mode. Run all said programs. Again, you can gamble using Normal Mode.
5) Start up Task Manager, and look under Processes. On another computer, manually do a search for all the files that you do not recognize. You can use that 2nd computer as reference to know which are obviously legit and which are suspicious.
6) If any harmful programs are still found to be running, the search should garner methods of removal as well. Follow them.
=> At this point, your computer should have tamed down quite a bit. At this stage, you have two other options:
a) Run msconfig (Start -> Run), under Startup. It's a list of all the programs set to automatically load up the moment Windows starts up. Check for suspicious programs again.
b) Call down someone with decent technical knowhow to give your computer a proper diagnostics.
Not really that hard, actually. Takes time, yes, but it's better than coughing up cash.

That and a freebie AV suite like AVG is all you need.
Malwarebytes found and killed the trojan Agent.3.r on my PC when AVG couldn't even see it and gave false paths to the location of non-existent files due to 3.r's activities. 3.r even reinstalls itself when you go back to a restore point, the rascal.
Malwarebytes is free and incredibly effective, I didn't even come off line while using it.

My old one flashed red. XD And then died. It didn't even HAVE a virus, it was dying from the day I first received it.
I gave my dad's a virus. I'm careful with which lyric websites I press now. I only watch things on YouTube like AMVs and know better than to press links. Other than that, I would use imeem more often if the media would upload faster, same with youku. I use Veoh for relatively old and the newest anime but the ads freeze my videos more often. -.-;;
My dad wonders why mine hasn't died yet. I have two sorts of protective thingies he got, but I fail at one of them.
