I Like Christmas and all, but I really think it's over-advertised.
I'm not christian or anything, I'm atheist, but that stuff is about the birth of Jesus.
It's about religion. Not some fat guy in a red and white suit with an amusing hat.

Wow, hello to you too, Mr. Scrooge!

Does that matter? It’s a time to have fun and celebrate whether you’re a Christian or not. The whole of Japan goes into mega-party mode at Christmas and almost none of them are Christian. Same with the USA (har, har, politico-religious joke).

Think of it in the old Pagan terms if you like – the middle of winter when the days begin to get longer and you can celebrate the spring soon to come.

Of course in Australia that’s a little odd, but anyway, who the heck needs an excuse to party?!

You can be a misery guts if you like, I’m going to flippin’ well enjoy myself!

I'm with Saddletank. Why complain about a holiday when it's really just an excuse to have fun? I agree that the idea of Santa Claus is silly, but really, who cares? Just enjoy yourself.

I concur! Though I also agree with Liam (as I've decided to call you) and Charlie Brown that Christmas has become too commercialized.

Merry Christmas to ALL!!!

I also wish that those people who want to bury religion in the public consciousness would shut up. I'm not religious, but I don't get all bent out of shape if somebody says Happy Hanukkah to me on the street or if some department store decides to hang up a Merry Kwanzaa banner (ok, Kwanzaa's not a religious holiday...false analogy...sorry) But seriously, who cares if it's called a Christmas tree or a holiday tree and it's sitting in the state capital...Seperation of church and state...give me a break...giving it a more ambiguous title doesn't make it less religious. What other holiday utilizes a Christmas tree? And like Liam said, Christmas isn't a religious holiday anymore anyways for most people.

So yeah. Cheers! And Happy New Year!

(though I should be careful not to offend people that operate on different calendars)

As a disclaimer, I realize that I am talking to myself in this post. I'm not criticizing any tavern-goers.

Well, I've heard of it but I didn't really think there were people who actually don't like Christmas. Another misconception shattered...

Anyway, I'm a firm atheist but I spend 364 days a year looking forward to Christmas. I love it, the mince pies, the Norfolk punch (so good!), the prezzies of course!

Christmas rules. Big time.

Well, people in Japan believe that Christmas is a day to spend time with your loved ones... hell, they probably don't even know what Christmas is about.

I celebrate a Christian Christmas within myself but a Capitalist Westernized Commercialized Christmas with my friends and that isn't an issue for me. God wants us to have fun and loves to see us enjoy ourselves anyway.

Yeah Kaz! I'm there with you totally...and Seiji, Orphic and Saddles ^_^ Christmas is brill. I'm not Christian or religious for that matter and I think it's one of the best times of the year. Like, hello?! A time for families and friends to be happy together and party. You're not going to let the media and commercialization ruin that for you, are you?

EDIT: just read the thread title again...and okay. So you have a problem with santa ... but what's with the 'crappy new year'?

Rub it in why don't you

We'll be lucky if there's any ice for us to slip on this year...*sob*

I had an epiphany the other day. For years I've been using "sob" as the onomatopoeia for crying. But only recently I realized, when seeing it in context, that it is also an acronym for son of a *****

That being said, if any of you have ever thought that I've called you a son of a *****, it was a misunderstanding on my part SO MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Lets face it, it's cold and dark outside. We *need* a reason to party. If it wasn't the birth of Christ, it would be the damn-it's-cold-again-we-need-a-party party.

Also: Mince pies.

Ah christmas is great even if it is becoming over-advertised, that just means more lovely sparkly things to buy for my tree! Tbh christmas means three things to me:
John Lewis (Where else would i buy pretty much everything a person could need for christmas - excepting food of coursE)
Christmas Tree (I love christmas trees, but of course they MUST be real. The smell is the best bit!)
PRESENTS (Need I say more?!)

And i know that instead of those three it should be Jesus and family and goodwill and all that sort of things - BUT I DONT CARE ;]

Wow, okay, now, I think I have had the worst month of Decembers combined than most people, and still I can't rag on Christmas. Lighten up a bit.

Is Christmas over commercialized? Yes, but so is everything else. Holidays are an excuse to do a few things, celebrate with friends and/or drinking. Giving gifts, getting days off work and/or school. Screw what it has become, put the blinders on.

And on an off note, perhaps if you layed off the maryln manson you would have a peachyer view on life.

Hear hear, that's good advice.

Oh, well, if you’re going to go into the juicy details as to why, I’d say:

Chestnut stuffing.
Little sausages with bits of yummy bacon wrapped round them.
Stockings. Erm… well you get the idea.

I used to dislike Christmas. I get really tired of the consumerism. Really tired. I don't like it when companies play on people's emotions to sell them things they don't want, or make them thing they need things they don't need, and Christmas gives them a perfect opportunity, because people feel compelled buy things for their friends that their friends don't want or need.

But, while I still feel that way about the consumerism aspect, Christmas has redeemed itself in my eyes as of yesterday. The bus driver who picked me up was wearing a santa claus costume, and it reminded me what Christmas is really about: Enjoying yourself and the company of others, in a way that people are normally reserved to do.

Liam, treat it as fun. How can fun be over-rated? Yeah, I get you with the commercialism bit, but just ignore that. Companies like to make profits, at Christmas its easy to make profits so they go for the hard sell on the susceptible consumer.

That don't mean you have to be a sucker and buy into all that.

This year we have seriously restrained our present buying, but we are still going to have a whole heap of fun.

I have to admit I do have my grinch moments. I hate Christmas shopping, there are far too many people and I'm a fast walker, any venture into town will inevitably result in me becoming frustrated. But aside from that, I know there'll be mince pies!
