At my School, there is only one girl, Elanore, who is my friend, that has actually heard of the studio Ghibli, i think it's impossible, ghibli is such a magnifient studio, i think it should be known by all, my mind shall not be changed.
I don't understand how people cannot like it.
You say ghibli and they say "Huh?"
It's crazy, it drives me crazy.
Gotta run!
What can i say, i like these picture peoples.

wow, you have a whale club? There was an anime club in my highschool, and there is an anime club at my University. I imagine that most of them have heard of studio ghibli. Unfortunatly though, most people don't know about it in the west. Maybe that will change, maybe it won't.

It probably will change, usually entertainment is a swingy thing. One year something will be instyle then it will change. its the circle of hollywood.

Yh we hav a whale club, not exactly sure Y its called a 'whale' club btu wtever. Tis good fun. We basically watch a few Ghibli films and hav fun talkin bout anime, everyone there knows what it is but i wuldnt say all of them r fans of it. Coz whale club is basically Sci Fi club and animes only a small part of it. What i wuld REALLY like to do is get a box set of a gd anime, FMA, Naruto, Ouran, Fruits Basket and take it in to the club and everyone to watch an episode, to show them theres more to anime then Ghibli. Its hard tho, they dont sell any good box sets where i live, i think id hav to go to london and hav a search around lawl... hmm shall ask my mum . But yh its klness there, the teacher who hosts is v.funny I dont know if anyones seen it but the old version of war of the worlds? Well the aliens hav a funny way of walking and Mr.Lopez (thts his name) started copying it and it ended up loomin like the Cha-Cha and we all burst into hysterics. Tht and the aliens look like showerheads.

hmm. Maybe WHALE is an acronym?
Anyways, yeah, anime is already popular culture, and it already shows. Anime is Japanese pop culture, so if a change were to occur that affected anime it would have to occur in Japan. Besides, there are tons of horrible pandering anime shows and movies out there already, just like there are tons of horrible TV shows and regular movies. There will always be great artists, just like there will always be plenty of crap. It is just like every other medium of entertainment in that respect.

Anime is NOT japanese pop culture. You'd be surprised to know that people who are into anime there are treated pretty much like us people outside Japan. As weirdos.
Anyway, someone claiming to be an anime fan doesn't really make me happy any more. not after I realized years ago that their idea of watching anime is limited to Naruto, Inuyasha and *gasp* Yugioh, mostly.

Anime IS Japanese popular culture. Something need not be popular in order to be pop culture. But rather, pop culture is defined as something that is transitory, available to the masses, and created in order to appeal to a specific group of people(sometimes that specific group of people is large enough to consider it mainstream, and sometimes it isn't). That is, pop culture is markedly different from high culture in that it is constantly changing. So, while there may be hundreds of great anime programs and movies to date, they will be less and less celebrated over time, as others later down the road take their place. In 200 years virtually nobody will have ever heard of any of the shows that we discuss on this forum, but people will still be performing Shakespeare and Mozart. Furthermore, anime is cheap (relatively speaking) and available to the masses. Virtually everything on television is popular culture for this reason, anime included. The reason I say that it is Japanese pop culture is because the Japanese make it. It is still pop culture in other countries, but even then it is still Japanese pop culture. Just like you wouldn't call the beatles anything but British pop culture, because they are British.

It was just an example, but thanks for proving my point. Pop culture is transitory.

Well I like YuGiOh too.
But I like most kinds of Anime and magna.
Old school anime like Astroboy, Speed Racer and Transformers.
Yu Yu Haksusho
Slayers
Revolutionary Girl Utena
The Cat Returns
Kiki's Delivery Service
And that's just the tip of the iceburg!
LOL You should see my room! My tv cabinet is stuffed with anime tapes and DVDs. I have anime toys and manga scattered all over.
Astroboy and Speed Racer dubs where shown here in the US in the 60s.
In the 70's and 80's there where Christain children shows like Flying House and Superbook that are also anime.
Most american adults who watched those shows back then still have no clue that those shows where orignally Japanese.
When I tell people that those shows where anime, they are pretty surprised and some are even shocked.
---------------------------------
Pop culture isn't just about what's going on now, it's also about the past too. Guys like the Beatles helped pave the way for the new artisits of today.
-----------------------------------
Sad to say most people outside of Japan think of anime and manga as "Kid Stuff". I have to resist the urge to slap folks or roll my eyes, when they make coments like, "Why are you reading a kid's book?" "Oh you got kids?"
