I'm looking forward to it too. I also feel a little unsure though, but for a completely different reason: I read the book.
Anyway, the book is about this prince who ends up travelling with a wizard all around this huge bunch of islands. A few things were altered for the film though, and some new stuff was introduced (which I believe was based on things that happened in the other books in the series). Anyway, that's all I'll say, to avoid spoiling things and/or making mistakes.

I think I'll read the book after the movie, like when I
read Howl.
I've watched too many trailers, clips, and read too much
about Gedo Senki so I shouldn't read the book til after.
Any way, looking forward to buying the japanese DVD!

We're probably never going to see it in theatres in this country, so unfortunately that's not an option. I don't know if or when the DVD would appear in the States, but I'd like to believe that's a possibility.
The Gedo Senki DVD will be released in Japan next summer, so, if nothing else, we'll be able to import and watch then.
As for the movie itself, there are many liberties taken from the original text, at least according to Diane Wynn Jones. Westerners would probably expect the next Harry Potter or the next Lord of the Rings, which is really the next Star Wars. Lots of action scenes and lots of explosions and what-have-you. Gedo Senki is pretty dialog-heavy, and Goro Miyazaki is using the text to work through his own thoughts, just like his father.
It's been a great success in Japan, which pretty much guarantees that Goro will become the heir apparant to the Ghibli studio. We'll likely see another film from him in a few years, after Miyazaki Senior's next film, and hopefully Takahata's as well.

Oh, I love shows/films with heavy diologue! All the more
interesting to me!
After Gedo Senki, I'm going to wait for Miyasaki Seniour's

The books are really good. But apparently the film is different in many ways. So when I do get to watch it, I'll just pretend I've never read the books, so that it doesn't spoil my enjoyment of the film.

my friend sent me a book, it's painted in watercolour and the girl looks just like the one in the gedo senki (alot of stuff matched the trailer) but she has coloured rings on her fringe thingy's I think it looks better than on the trailer but oh well.... it was drawn by miyazaki in the 1980's btw so gedo senki isn't a new story.
It annoys me that we may not see it for so long, stupid disney.

Of course it's not a new story if it's based on a book. Or am I getting the wrong idea of what you're trying to say?

The only Ghibli work that was shown on general release in UK theatres was Howl, and I think that release was riding purely on the back of the awards Spirited Away won. Howl didn't do well over here (not enough anime fans) so I doubt we'll ever see another big screen general release in the UK.
No doubt small specialist theatres show them from time to time but I can't think of any off hand.

YO!!
the miyazaki manga youre talking about is probably Shuna no Tabi (Shuna´s journey)...
Although the story is based on Earthsea by le Guin, Goro is supposed to have inspired himself aritistically from Shuna no Tabi.. ![](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Is there any information about it being released in the UK? (DVD or otherwise) I have been doing some research, and nothing has come up.

I've found no news yet either. But it will be a good while, years probably. The Japanese DVD release is due in 2008 and depending on how slickly Disney/Lassiter work we might see an English dub by very late 2008 or early 2009. And after that we in the UK will have to wait for Asia Optimum Releasing (the UK licencsed distributor) to burn their discs and do their packaging...
But I'm pretty confident that the 2008 Japanese release will have English subs which is fine if you have a DVD player that will play region 2 discs which UK ones do, so I may go for the Japanese with subs when it's available and if I enjoy the film, pick up the Disney dub later on.

The official Ghibli website has a lot of information about it. (I haven't had a chance to get a proper look.)
There's also (I think it might be from Hallmark -- or the same people who did Gulliver's Travels, Dinotopia, etc) a live action TV miniseries of Earthsea. Haven't had a chance to catch that either, but it also looks good.

I thought the Japanese DVD was being released in 2007?
