Well, Goro Miyazaki has struggled with living under the shadows of his parents, especially the father. This movie will address that to a great extent. So, yeah, you're going to see a lot that reminds you heavily of Horus and Nausicaa and Miyazaki's stock characters.
Cathy really is the glue that holds Animal Treasure Island together, I think. She's enough of a radical departure from the original book (the movie is only very loosely based on the RLS novel, in typical Miyazaki fashion), and enough of a firebrand, she pulls the whole movie along on her back. And she's certainly one of the angrier incarnations of the Miyazaki Heroine. But, hey, she was the first. Good first impressions are important.
