arren18: Oh! Well Sabriel is pretty awesome. My favorite is Abhorsen, but read Lirael before it...you have to read them all in order, or you don't get the full effect...those books are so amazing!

I think most fantasy is too dry for Studio Ghibli. I haven't read most of the ideas posted so far, though. But a lot of fantasy novels are so epic in scale. Although many Ghibli movies cover vast lands, the stories are always small and focused. Which makes them personal and special. That's why I think 99% of fantasy wouldn't really work for Ghibli.
As for older classics about war, I think Ghibli does a wonderful job at capturing time periods yet making characters ageless. However, war has so many brutal elements in it and I don't think many novels capture the childish views of it. Like in 'GoTF.'
I would like to see 'David Copperfield' done by Takahata. Dickens books usually seem too harsh and adult for Ghibli material.

Personally, I'd rather see original stories than adaptations.
But if anything, I would die to see a movie adaptation of Miyazaki's Shuna no Tabi. Would never see light, I know, but I can dream, right?
Otherwise, maybe I'd like to see the famous japanese novel "I am a cat" adaptation. Haven't personally rwad it, but I heard it's pretty renowned in the literary world.
I agree. Their original stories are my favorite.
I've read the entire English translation of "I am a Cat." I adore it. It's actually two books. Very long. I think Studio Ghibli would do a good job of making it into a short story!

I have. Like old samurai movies and 80's horror flicks.
