Yeah, i'm allergic to Hilary Duff
and TAG(I get sick, okay?)..
Crying..hmm..You never usually
hear the person cry, like I never heard
Haruhi cry when she was. And Mei and
Sophie. Their voices just wavered, I noticed.

I love the scene where Mei cries. It is exactly right, the right sound, the right body language. Clearly Miyazaki has studied kids crying, he's totally in tune with it.
Sophie crying when she falls back through time is lovely too, her tears floating around her *sigh* what imagery.
Shizuku cries beautifully as well, when she does I do too. Every time. She cries four times in one movie. Must be a record.

I've gotta count that..
Yeah, I cry too like that
part, like I do when animes
come to an end, like Bottle Fairy's
ending.
I thought it was cute when Mei
cried. little girls always look cute
when they cry. It's their weakness
towards us older people.

Once you have kids of your own you just notice crying babies and other toddlers much more. I think there is some primal part of the parent, some protective mechanism that kicks in and responds to a crying baby/child and it makes you want to help it.
Which is why I know Mei crying is exactly right, because I respond to her by wanting to help her. Satsuki's reaction is superb as well, a slightly older child who wants to act strong and not cry but who can't deal with her younger sister crying and doesn't know how to help her. Perfect.

Sheeta cries about four times or so as well. Both heroines are alike in that they are very strong yet also very sensitive and vulnerable. Actually, most of Miyazaki's heroines are like that .

I've not watched Laputa for ages, I need to see it again. And do a "tear count".

A lot of the characters look like older or younger versions of some character or something. Kanta from My Neighbor Totoro looks like Seita from Grave of the Fireflies. Maybe it's just the hat and the hair. Kiki kinda looks like a younger version of Sheeta when her pigtails get cut off. Nausicaa kinda reminds me of Fio with the red hair and the whole flying gig.
