I've just finished watching akira, and it was absolutely amazing !
I have a question...
What were those patterns that the doctor guy had in the lab? The rainbow coloured circles that jumped up and down on top of a machine. The doctor said that, "he couldn't destroy such a good sample". Was he refering to Tetsuo? Did he not destroy Tetsuo because his 'patterns' were similar to Akira's pattern?
I'm slightly confused about those 'patterns' ~ does anyone remember what they were?

I think that, like a cardiac monitor in hospital translates your heart beat into that little green line, the patterns are merely Tetsuo's and Akira life force, or possibly their telekinetic ability. Tetsuo's pattern was as powerful as Akira's had been (and as I remember was also very similar looking and sounding), and as Akira had abilities never seen before, Nezu (I'm sure that's his name) can't bear to destroy Tetsuo. It's suuuuuuuuch an awesome movie, it says so much about Otomo that loads of the film is 'shot' at night and in Tokyo, soooo hard to do, but he did it beautifully. My favourite bit is when Tetsuo loses control of his powers, and turns into that huge fleshy monster (not sure how else to describe it!). Also, did you know that in the original dub, Kaneda was voiced by Jimmy Flinders, who was also the voice of Leonardo in the original Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles!
These are my 2 fave posters from the movie;
OK, my Akira gush is over! Anyone else think the patterns mean something else?

well i think it just symbolises tetsuo's power level and then he compares it to akira's level of power too see if there is any difference or if tetsuo is getting to become the next akira... ACE!! film though but the remake to make it into 5.1 was a real let down though but to say it was all hand drawn its one amazing work of art all together...

Basically, it is a monitor of physic powers or a monitor of someone's life force...
That makes much more sense, thank you, SpiritedSen and mpw3d!
It is an absolutely amazing film. I told loads of people about it at school today, but they decioded that they wouldn't watch it as soon as I told them it was anime... They said that because it was animated it wouldn't be half as good as a real life film with computer generated effects...
That's the trouble. People here have decided that all anime must be disney-like happy, flowery and bouncy foolishness...
...but akira isn't, watch if if you haven't already done so... if you have... watch it again, it's that good!

I agree completely! I've gotta say, I remember the first time I saw an adult anime...it was so weird to hear these cartoon characters swearing, but I loved it! I reckon a lot of peeps here think anime is all Pucca and Hello Kitty (which I love as well!). As far as I'm concerned, anime is the highest form of cinema...it takes the most work, and can reach new heights of action and emotion that live actors can only dream of acheiving! And as for the action sequences, CG is really overrated...it doesn't look real, it just looks CG! (I think Ang Lee's 'Hulk' is the best bit of CG I've seen in a long time, he looked so real...and 'Final Flight Of The Osiris' rules too!)
There's a poster of Akira that says 'No Akira, no Matrix. It's that important'. IT'S FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT!! Akira brought anime to western audiences, and for that, and SO many other reasons, it deserves to be worshipped!
