I really wish this was a joke, sadly it doesn't seem so. The information is taken from JapanProbe.com, a news blog I have been a frequenter of for a few years. It seems authentic.

A live action version of the popular anime movie Akira is coming, and it will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio:
With its mature themes and cutting-edge animation, “Akira” was a milestone movie in anime and mainstream animation circles, leading the way for anime to make inroads into Western pop culture in the 1990s.
The new story, which DiCaprio will produce for Warner Bros., ideally would be a two-part epic, with the first movie coming out next summer. The action will move to “New Manhattan,” a city rebuilt by Japanese money.
Are you looking forward to this movie?

Ugh. Hollywood. Yech. Why don't they fund a new anime movie? Rather than rehash an old cash cow?

Well, lets break down this article. Akira itself was really good, pretty mind bending, and I think it would work sorta in live action. Now the bad news: Leonardo DiCaprio should not be allowed anywhere near a movie screen let alone producer. That is what kills it, if you had a decent sci-fi director and producer you could make a run at doing it a decent homage, but with DiCrapio there, brace yourselves.

Yeah, I agree with saddles and what you've said was my first impression too. Why bother remaking the film when the original is very good already, and of all the people to direct it they should've chosen someone with more pedigree. I can't think of any films directed by decaprio....ever. They'd probably pick a god-awul cast too.
Can you imagine it? Tetsuo played by Daniel Radcliffe. Rofl!

Hollywood is drooling over the bike scenes, and the end battle would be pretty good to.
It all goes through the producer and director, and with DiCaprio being one of them, you know it will be bad, give me a Spielberg in his prime and maybe an Indiana Jones-era Lucas and then we'll talk. It still wouldnt be great, but it might be watchable, with nice special effects.

I'd be wanting him to die horribly as a 50-storey marshmallow after 5 minutes. He makes a pretty wizard but not an anime character. An all Japanese cast would be interesting though, with subtitles... not much chance of that though.

If it's Hollywood, it'll probably be an outright English adaptation, like Dark Water, The Grudge, The Ring, etc, with an all-English cast set in the western world.
I'm not keeping my fingers crossed though, seriously, unless it comes out like Silent Hill, which was a good adaptation movie.

I wouldn't be surprised if this movie has an all caucasion cast and is set in the PAST.

Ahhhhh!
I love this film.
I dont want them to ruin it.
I dont think we should judge Di Caprio just yet, I mean im sure theres more to him then a pretty face. I mean I didnt expect much in the way of directing from Mel Gibson but this films i've seen of his so far have been fantastic.
I doubt it can become anywhere near as good as the original but im not going to write it off as a mistake instantly.

I honestly don't see a whole lot wrong with a "Westernized" adaptation of a foreign film--if they're already remaking the movie for a Western audience, and if the location isn't particularly relevant to the plot, then why not?
Still, I'd rather have no adaptation.
