Before getting the show on the road, I'd like to give a few personal comments on the series. This is a relatively light series, comparable to, say, Cardcaptor Sakura or PitaTen. And do take note that the original series was published by Ribon, which is generally read by little girls. So don't expect any blow-you-away scenes or complex storylines.
The genre covered by the series include romance, humour and drama. And there's magical girl transformation, just a heads up to you guys.
That's outta the way. Now on to the first 3 eps. Well actually I watch the first four 'cause that's how many I burned per CD, but eh.
Starting with the 1st ep.
So we get introduced to the main heroine, Kouyama Mitsuki, and her sidekicks (sorta), Takuto and Meroko, who are there supposedly to stop her from meeting a certain somebody who will prevent her death in a year's time, but being the heroine, Mitsuki gets more determined to achive her dream of being a singer despite having throat cancer, gets help from the Takuto, and all's well that ends well.
Anyone wanna discuss how the Shinigami(death god) duo is supposed to stop her from meeting whoever it is without knowing who he is in the first place?
Not that the viewers are supposed to think about it, but eh.

go watch them again there on the tube. i liked the first ep. i watched it while i was bored and needing a series to view so im a tad rusty on the series but the opening was good, it sets up the whole series. the characters were really good, i like Mitsuki, and she has a good plight. the two Shinigami were kinda annoying, i dont know the proper background on it Roar so i cant really comment on the continuity issue you seem to have found.

Wow, yeah, this is quite 'light' material isn't it?
The artwork style reminds me of more traditional anime from the 80s (say, Power Rangers or stuff of that quality).
Even so, having just watched ep.1 I did find moments in it quite touching, esp Mitsuki's refusal to undergo an operation on her throat.
The only info we are given about her fate is the above - throat cancer - and an operation to remove the tumor, therefore my only thought at this stage is that she will (or would have?) die(d) during the operation. Given that, the Shinigami need to keep her away from the doctor/hospital.
The doctor seems a nice guy (he thinks the op is necessary) who Mitsuki trusts which is making me nervous.
However, singing/auditioning is going to make her condition worse and so the likelehood of an operation greater (her granny thinks she should have the op and seems quite worked up about that).
Is her mother dead? Seems so. If so, what did she die of? I'm guessing cancer right now...
So the Shinigami need to keep her away from the surgeon is my thought right now, these two seem pretty clued up on things and would know the fate/background of the child they are here to escort to the afterlife so I guess they simply 'know' her future or cause of death in that respect.
Will grab eps.2 and 3 tomorrow night.

well, it isnt that the operation will kill her, its that she has a very good chance of having her vocal chord damaged and being unable to sing or speak again.
the art is a bit more classic, it is kinda an in between art style. its not great detail a la Jin Roh, Akira, but it isnt super bland, so im happy with the art, expect sigs form it, i always get really into a series and then go sig crazy. i am confused with these death god things, im not quite sure what there purpose is so thats the main reason they annoy me.

I ain't gonna spoil about the death of her parents cuz I'm sure that'll be covered in some later eps, despite it not being that big a deal (they're dead, won't bother with the story too much).
Anyway, it's cancer all the same. Which means, taking into account Mitsuki not wanting an operation, the tumour will grow and spread, probably to her lungs, and that can get real critical real fast.
But while I agree the doctor Wakaouji may hve something to do with it, he's been seeing Mitsuki for years. And Mitsuki's not supposed to go out that day, so it's most probably some other random person.
Which means they just have to keep Mitsuki in the house.
...
...
...
I think I just answered my own question. GAH!!!
*cough*
Anyway, while I can't really remember the exact details, ep2 deals with Takuto's discovery of Mitsuki's "impure" intentions and it's conclusion. Ep3 is simple slapstick comedy about Mitsuki trying to hide the fact that she's 12 from her manager, and the fact that's she's not a model to her doctor (who happens to be her "guardian" in the form she filled out). Overall, ep3 is just simple fun, rather enjoyable.
@Saddle: Yes, it's very light. Look on the bright side, it's maggie-safe. Need anything deeper, just wait for Paranoia Agent to arrive (and pray the subs do justice to the original script).

hey lets hold the horses there Roar, at least wait for most of us to finish all 3 eps before we start talking about all three eps. i finished the 2nd ep. very enjoyable, it does deal with the motivations and intentions of Mitsuki's actions. its a good second ep, and keeps things moving along.

Oh, shinigamideath gods)
I should explain why they are there. If you want. It took a while after the series to figure out and it won't spoil anything.
Meroko and Takuto are two people who committed suicide before their time was up. So, now they are punished with the task of taking peoples souls. That is there punishment, along with other things but it'll spoil the series.
There's another shinigami who comes in later, Izumi and Jonathan, who may seem like a bastard or a jerk, but he actually helps out.
I know all there deaths!^^Except, you won't learn two of them. He he he he he..
There's different things for death gods in about anything, so these ones were people who committed suicide, have the punishment of having all their memories erased and have to take peoples lives. They turn into their shinigami animal(I don't know WHY though)form, I guess, when they want to hide or to follow the human easily.

Mmm, I prefer the explanation of suicide being a great sin, and their punishment thus is to suffer in depression by taking more lives (i.e. seeing people die again and again). But that's just me.
@Sanfan: Actually, I went ahead and watched up till ep8 already, lol, sorry. But hey, with a voice that good, can't help it.
When we're done up to that point, I'll post the lyric translation of her debut song. More than the voice or the music, the lyrics are really meaningful, and offer a good insight on Mistuki's love life.
So, as per request, unless anyone has got anything else to discuss from the first ep, we'll move on to the 2nd?
I already spoiled the story, so eh. Anyway, what do you think of the "ethics" of Mitsuki's and Takuto's reasons for being a singer?

ethics is a wierd word for me as i always confuse it, now if im still right as i learned it in school this year, ethics would be what is right from what is wrong. i think.
So Takuto's reason of her doing it for impure reasons is false. Mitsuki is doing it to keep a promise and she has recognized that she has a talent for singing, and that she enjoys doing it, she also recognizes that she wants to fulfill here promise. So she is working both halves. she does it for herself and her own personal desires and dreams, but it is also the same thing that someone else wanted of her which she can still fulfil and have a fine conscience. I think Takuto is wrong in his assumption and really brought down an unnecessary weight on Mitsuki.

Thanks but if that isn't a spoiler I don't know what is...
Can we stick to the eps we are watching please and not do a summing up of/near the end of the series yet?
Huh?
I've watched 1 thru 3 now and didn't get a great deal more from the 2nd and 3rd except in the 2nd Mitsuki's moral reasons to be a singer as as valid as anyone's ever had I think. Unless there is a very good reason we don't know of yet for Takuko to take the stance he did on the purity of Mitsuki's motives I don't agree with his views.
The little piece of jewellery she bought in ep.2 which Takuto changed into a much more elaborate charm - is that charm significant?
And ep.3 well that was just good old fashioned slapstick comedy fun, all the shape changing to take the place of different people at different times was nicely done if a bit weird.
And even though the opening title song is a bit goofy it's growing on me as is the art style, esp Mitsuki's cute dance in the opening.

the opening is cool, i enjoyed it, the biggest thing i dislike about the series is how hard it is to find good screen shots for sigs, wow is it tough, i might download a few eps to maybe cap the opening as there are some sig worthy pics, but i still have to watch the thrid ep, probably doing that now.
EDIT: watched the third ep, very cool, very funny.

Charm? I don't remember her buying any charm. I know she had a small purse though, which Takuto transformed into a dog whistle so that she can contact him at all times.
And yeah, that butt shak- I mean dance routine is too cute. The song needs a little getting used too though, I agree.
On the ethics thingy, while I agree with Takuto instead of Mitsuki, there's more of a misunderstanding by Takuto here. Mitsuki already loves to sing before she fell in love with Eichi, and the promise is just a target, a goal if you will. So technically she can't get sick of singing. Of course, there are other job aspects that comes with being a singer, so that could be a problem. In this case, her promise to Eichi would help to motivate her, rather than hinder her.
That's my opinion anyways. I always did believe that you can never do something properly unless you really want to.
That aside, I vote for discussions on ep4 onwards to start next Monday.

Agreed, I can watch something else over the weekend.
It wasn't the bum wiggling I was thinking of, its the soooo kawaii arm and leg moves she does while facing the camera.
Yup, watch ep.2 again. She definitely buys a small flat silver metal charm on a chain in a shop but drops it when Eichi shows up in the town square. But at least I now know what Takuto transformed it into and why.
I just wondered, if he wanted to give her the whistle, why transform a charm she'd wanted to buy for herself?
But maybe that's a bit deep...

You mean the routine after the arm switching to the the arm tapping thingy. Yeah, that was actually good.
On why, no idea. He probably just chose something at random to transform.
@Sanfan: There's FFF. Dunno if JRR has been watching.
Recently I haven't been in the mood to watch any anime. Hell, all I do now is to do my usual online routine, which takes only a hour or so, and then that's it.

Hm, that's the bit, with the leg swings as well. Looks like someone who could really dance choreographed that bit. Does one choreograph anime? Now there's a question.
As a fairly random thought, is the auditioning for young singers in the show more or less how its done in Japan, with an agent being assigned etc? I would imagine a huge amount of exploitation goes on in that industry.
And what sort of careers do these girls have? Fifteen minutes of fame doing a couple of instantly forgettable J-Pop tunes? Some advertising jingles? Or can the best of them get into proper singing, acting or anime VA work?

And I can't come on as much because my family is busy cleaning the house and doing all the rooms over.(we did dining room and living room over a couple years back, now we're doing the kitchen, my sister's room, and my room over.)
Also, my mom is trying to get me to go out more and be less on the internet. My dad is probably going to download all of Full Moon for me, along with SSR. Then I'll see if I can find the DVD's for this series, and the French ones for SSR.
I can still answer some questions. I don't know how often I'll remember to come on in the summer though. He he..
