Is it just me or do i see something a little strange about mobile phones, they become so addictive that people take them everywhere. What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Mine is convenient to take places. D: I've yet to dress it up because fancy cases for it aren't readily available online at decent prices. >.< Darn. And I can't attach phone straps. T.T I don't really have anyone to text. But it's good to have on me. Some friends text me. My boyfriend doesn't have a cell at the moment, because he broke his and is waiting for a new one to come out this fall.

I just find mine cute~. But I'm never usually texting in public on it. XD Or making calls. I don't even know how to properly answer my phone. The one time it rang, I jumped and hid from it while watching it from the corner. Never found out who it was..

I think that mobile phones are incredibly useful and convenient. But this phone addiction thing, to be blunt, makes me sick. I think it would actually be BETTER to just play video games or watch tv all day. At least some video games can have some miniscule amount of substance, but texting and Twitter are just time wasters (unless used for an actual purpose and not random chatting).

That's why I like forums so much. You don't have to constantly be on it. I check this forum once per day and that's enough.

What frustrates me about the mobile phones is that people everywhere are on them, ignoring others around them. I went to a restaurant yesterday for lunch and a guy walking by almost walked into me while texting. He was about 35 or so and never even saw me. I said a few words, but he ignored me and continued walking and texting. Then, while in the restaurant, I was forced to listen to two separate phones conversations from nearby booths. It doesn't do any good anymore to complain to these idiots. If I should happen to receive a call on my own phone, I see who it is. If I answer it, I speak in a low voice and explain that I am eating right now and woll call them back.

I also hate it when idiots have their phones on in a theater while the movie is playing. Not only the noise is distracting, but the light from their screen, even half-way down the theater (I like to sit in the back). I always turn the phone off when I'm in a theater or a church or any kind of location like that. When I used to be on call, I kept it on vibrate during those times and waited until I got outside to talk, other than a quick "I got the call, hold on".

Yes, it is convenient and I do use it more than my house phone, but I understand that there are some courtesies that are necessary and I try to abide by them. As for talking and driving, again, I check to see who it is, open the phone and tell them that I am driving and either to wait a minute until I can find a place to stop or that I will call them back later. I don't even put it to my ear, just hold it near my face and say what I have to say and hang up, if appropriate. If it was an emergency, they will call back.

My phone ONLY has the phone/texting (which I never use) apps and that is all I need or want. My sons can go online, take pictures. I never use my 300 minutes. I have no-roving charges and pay a single fee which seldom varies ( I sometimes use information). To me, a phone is a phone is a phone and nothing more. I sometimes forget about it and it startles the hell out of me when it starts ringing and vibrating in my posket...

OK, enough ranting... bye bye

I don't really see it as a bad thing for people to be taking their mobile everywhere they go. Like if i go out to meet one of my friends, and i can't find them i can always just call them. Without my mobile i usually go crazy lol in situations like that.

Yes, I usually take my phone with me everywhere as well. But, there is a limit. Like the guy walking down the middle of the sidewalk, testing, and I had to move out of HIS way because HE didn't see me... BTW, he was with two women and was ignoring them as well... Or the restaurant chatter... Yes, it is good to be available with you a means of contact, but a bit of courtesy wouldn't be amiss either...

Yeah i hate when people are ignoring people when they are on the phone or talking really loudly. I see people a lot talking on the phone loudly when they give the bus fair to the driver without even giving him/her a glance!

I find phone calls annoying if they interupt me from something, so a lot of the time i'll just leave it to voice mail

Oh and i don't like ringtones! I wish more people would just leave their phones on vibrate.

Taking them everywhere isn't about addiction. It's for convenience. It why they're called mobile phones, they're meant to be taken everywhere.

I don't really have a problem with them being out in public, just so long as there isn't any trouble being caused y'know? Having them out at the cinema is unforgiveable, I'll grant you that, but I don't mind people talking or texting anywhere else. Now that I've got a phone with internet and apps etc I'm on it a lot more, it's good for passing the time while I'm waiting for a bus, things like that.

My personal thoughts on mobile phones... socialists stop reading now...

I hate the things very much, Of course like nearly all the population i have one but i haven't used the thing for years and don't intend to. If people want to see people they should go to go see them, that's what friendship is about making way for that person to have time with them.

I understand there important uses, but i understand the pointless uses as well, and as few people know i am against allot of things most people consider to be normal in a big way.

When i want to talk to a friend about something ever 5 seconds they say: wait a sec and start texting. It drives me crazy, this surely can not be natural behavior...

Before i wrap up this rant i would like to put forward that i will not be talking about this, this rant is for read only.

...no idea what that had to do with socialism, but whatever.

Really seems silly to me to hate something so useful. Talking to someone on the phone or texting them is not equivalent to seeing them, never will be, and isn't treated as such. To say that you shouldn't communicate with them without actually seeing them is ridiculous... that's like saying letters and email should be banned.

As for that friend, sounds like you got unlucky. I don't know anyone like that.

I myself hardly ever use my phone. I used to use it a lot more often, and now I just sort of... don't. At the moment, I actually have no idea where my phone even is and it hasn't been bothering me at all. Granted, no one really texts me or calls me on it anymore because I typically don't respond, but still. I'm fine without it. The only reason that I'm missing it all is that my mom is ridiculous about safety when I leave (which is silly because I'm sixteen and I'll be alright) and always wants me to have my phone so I can call if anything happens. Although I guess that is reasonable. Usually when I have my phone, I use it for safety or for convenience--like if I'm meeting with friends and need to call them for any reason. So they'r every convenient and very useful in this way, but I can definitely survive without my phone without much problem at all.

I know i wasn't going to answer but it seems i need to clear something up here.
That is not what im getting at, im not saying the things should be banned, what im trying to say is the amount of time people are using them, and taking them everywhere is insane.
I don't know about other country's but in Britain 1 out of 25 people i see on a street is not using a phone.
as for texting and people communicating, again i don't know about other country's but... seriously what people text about half the time is completely irrelevant anyway.
As for the social side... we don't need technology running are lives....
Now like i said before im not going to answer any more reply's to my previous post, because of its nature.

Mobile phones are great when I'm supposed to meet with someone and can't find something, or when I'm out and need to call home because of a change of plans. But in general, I don't like them.

I can no longer call someone without expecting to interrupt them, and I can no longer go places without expecting to get interrupted. That is the price of this technology and I don't appreciate paying it.

I could turn my phone off, of course, or leave it at home. But the problem is that social expectations have changed. Most of the time, it's now considered rude for me to miss a phone call or to not promptly reply to a text message. So I take my phone everywhere, not because I'm addicted to it (I almost never use it), but because if someone wants to contact me, they'll be angry that I didn't have my phone. Because this technology exists, I'm pressured to use it.

Although there's not much I can do to avoid this annoyance, I can at least avoid inconveniencing others the same way. So I now routinely avoid making phone calls unless necessary, and use email/IM to communicate with my friends and make arrangements. Unfortunately, web-connected smart phones are starting to take away that option too.

Pretty soon I'll have to seriously consider, before sending any message to anyone, whether they will be receiving it in a movie theatre, in a restaurant, or in the middle of a deep conversation with someone else. Perhaps I'll have to resort to snail mail.

Yes, I am one of those smartphone users. It was really weird when I first got it, I felt the need to reply to everything right away so as not to be rude. I was so busy being available to people that I had no time for anything else. It was really frustrating. And I had to work on ignoring all the notifications, emails, texts, and IM messages to a certain extent.

I miss snail mail. Or the concept of it. By the I was old enough to really utilize it, emails were being forced on us.

I also miss phone calls. There are maybe 5 people outside my family that I regularly talk to one the phone. Everyone else has this aversion to calling.

I generally don't look at mine when I'm with other people because I'm the sort of person that really focuses on the conversation at hand. If I tried to be texting at the same time, I would probably end up not hearing a word the person I'm talking to says.

Anyway, I do like cell phones, they're convenient and I am able to be much more connected to people than I would be otherwise. You can't see most people at whim, but you sure can text them. Maybe most text messages are random and pointless, but they're fun and they let people know you're thinking about them. At the same time, there's the risk of creating a disconnect between people if they only ever contact each other through electronic means. DILEMMA.

I know what is meant by people now, more or less, are expecting you to be available when they call. I forgot my cell at home one day and didn't notice its missing until later on. When I got home, there were 4 or 5 messages calls, missed texts and a number of voicemails.

My son and dau-in-law panicked when they couldn't get a hold of me and even drove over to check on me. When I called them, they chewed me out a bit and I CHEWED back! I am not a dog and don't wear a leash... If you haven't heard from me in over 24 hours and know that I am not working, then come over to the house and nudge me in the side to see if I am still alive. Otherwise, don't worry about it...

Talking about mobiles, i want to get a new one. I've had mine for almost five years and is the only one i have had, which is much more than most teenagers! But it isn't working very well anymore.

I'm thinking of a Nokia, suposibably they last longer than most.
