Happy birthday, Takahata-san!
In a way, I actually think that I like Takahata more than Miyazaki. Miyazaki is incredible, but Takahata has a gift for creating such beautiful, realistic, intimate stories.

I think i might like Takahata a little bit more. Hayao has made more films, and they are so beautifully drawn. But the emotion i feel from Takahatas films, particularly his characters, is just so yeah lol. Hard to describe really.

I know exactly what you mean! Takahata's characters are full of emotion because they are so realistic and flawed. I still think the sweetest of all little ghibli girls is Setsuko from Grave of the fireflies

I find it weird though, how even though i guess they aren't fantasy characters they aren't like anyone, but still relatable. I like Taeko the most of his characters, but even though she's a say 30ish woman i find her so relatable.
I haven't seen Grave for quite some time, when i look at my shelf to watch a ghibli i think of watching it - but it is so sad.
