Have you ever heard music by yanni or jamfir or kenny g. these are the greatest musicians of this timeline. But after i am acknowledged with him.I am thinking he can be the fourth guy.
the only problem about his music is that it is painful.i do not is it for miyazaki[he always likes to think negative]. I think he should try to make something beautiful also cheerful. But i know that is not possible because art is made deep below from heart. So if you try to change that feelings it will be a complete mess.He is not very old i wish that he continues to make music even after miyazaki and takahata retires.
however my favourite is Theme song of Nausicaa and the middle song of mononoke.

I do not know why, whenever i try something Japanese, i feel that sorrow is coming. Most of the films and anime [the good ones like dragon ball] etc end with something very painful. yes there are some other ones too but those are actually stupid cartoons with girls and boys[no social relationship is shown].
I think this is one of the main reason why the japanese try to make
perfect things. you can see when they make cars, electronics and other things they try to make things perfect enough so that we can not complain.they are afraid to be criticized.
so why they always feel pain.most of you know The suicide rate is highest in japan.is it in their culture.
if you have seen ocean wave or only yesterday or other animes of studio ghibli the father person is very rude and likes to dictate. the relationship with mother is weird too.
most of my word may seem complicated to you because i am from culture where it is impossible to imagine a life without mom and dad. so it seems very weird to me that father and mother is letting 9 or 10 years boy and girl do whatever they like and not guiding them to a good future.
I think time has come to change that look.
what do you think.

I do understand your point from the music, allot of it has a distinctive depressing sad tone, Take the sixth station in spirted away for example. Or ashitaka's theme. They all have a eerie tone that i can only explain as seeming depressing/sad like.

I agree, but I think it is there to just emphasise emotion!

Culture differences is why you feel that way.
There is a growing misconception in the younger generations that life in Japan is the same as what they see in anime and dramas. And that they somehow can "understand" what the shows are trying to say.
It's not. They don't.
You have to remember that whatever you see on TV and movies are exactly that: FICTION. You cannot compare these to actual reality and say that so-and-so are like that just because of a few programs you watched.
Regarding the "depressing" music, well, the thing about music is that it depends on the listener.
To you, it sounds depressing.
To me, it's soothing/empowering/exciting.
Besides, the vast majority of the music used in Ghibli movies are hardly depressing. Otherwise, like Wikidkid said, it's just to emphasize emotions.

That is exactly what i am trying to say roarkiller. It is the culture .That makes me and you feel about a song or a music differently.
But if you disagree with me in the fact of sadness. I have to say politely that you are wrong.I do not see the families like yamadas much. That is one of the main reason why takahata made this to show us how a happy family lives.Directors and writers are social beings too. to my point the frustration in their works make me sad. You absolutely can not say movies and literature can not point out the aspect of a society[for your info i do not see anime entirely. I only watched doraemon, Dragon Ball z and Hagimaru. To me studio ghibli's movies are not anime, they are movies(except ponyo)]
[all these talking is rubbish but i am doing this just because i love Japanese people,to my aspect i just can not see that someone i love is shimmering because of not having any inspiration. So please please do not take my words offensively. If i am wrong make me right.I always wanted to learn the different aspects of different cultures]

Yeah I kinda hate it when I sound like I'm arguing (I'm not). That above was just my opinion.

to fenkashi
I do not like to think about the movie as a movie because it does not really have the massage inside of it.[like nausicaa, mononoke ,porco or laputa]
After making panda and Totoro miyazaki had hard time making a movie that can actually entertain little kids. although i am very fond of panda and totoro, the ponyo theme did not seemed very natural to me. i can not say the same thing to totoro and panda.
in ponyo director miyazaki willingly cut some aspects of social life which were present in both panda and totoro.
another thing is my point of view. i am a person who likes to watch movies which strictly directed like miyazaki and must also posses a central theme[whatever it is educational, entertaining, moral or ideological]. watching ponyo i felt same as watching pulp-fiction. [which was a epic movie without a massage and won 2 oscar]
However the problem with pixar and ghibli is you just can not hate them. its just the problem that i want more.
do you know i started this thread just after i watched 5 centimeters per second[all episodes]
i think you also felt very bad about the boy('')[you got a picture of it so i asked , i felt bad and wanted to slap both the boy and the girl ,i used smiley just to make the conversation light]

i know though it can sound crazy but i did not liked tahatas grave of the fireflies by heart
but i like him very much because of his system. i heard so and so many complain about the film that i was very very frightened to see the movie. yes there is sorrow in it but takahata knows the boundaries of human heart if he killed the boy and the little girl at end i could have a heart attack ('') [hey i am not very old(just over 19)]
but he knew that too so he killed them before we even know them. if we know the ending we do not get very emotional. that is a outstanding method of telling a truth that is what fascinates me. but am telling this because after my previous reply you can get my massage wrong.

I respect your viewpoints even though I don't always agree with them, but I must say one thing. Many, many people have never had a chance to see all of the Ghibli movies so we try here in the Tavern to not give out any spoilers about them. Touching on aspects of a movie without telling others what has occurred in the story is hard to do sometimes, but for the enjoyment of others, we try not to tell them what is going to happen.
It is like telling about a mystery film and starting off by saying that, "Well, it was a good film, the butler killed his master and was found guilty in the end, but it started in the countryside..." I think you can get my meaning from this. Giving away the plot is not a good thing, usually.
And yes, I know that some movies are filmed exactly like this, lol With the telling beforehand of what has happened. CSI, a TV show does this...
For me, Graves of the Fireflies is a very good movie, but I have seen it once and will not see it again for the reason that it hit too close to home for me, personally. I and my sister are about the same ages as the main characters and much of the story could have described how I viewed my relationship with my sister. I was her primary caregiver when she was young and she acknowledges this, much to our mothers chagrin...
anyway, keep on posting, we love hearing the viewpoints of other members.

i agree with husky and roar. Most Ghibli music i find to be soothing/empowering/exciting, Joe Hisaishi in Budokan is amazing, a real roller coaster of sound. And Grave of the Fireflies is a great film, but heartbreaking... Everyone's got their own opinions on these things anyway...
