Well personally its about my least favourite Ghibli. I appreciate the art, storytelling and directing but the film is just too depressing for words. I've seen it once and won't watch it again. I prefer different sorts of stimulus when I want to be entertained.

Damn, that film was a masterpiece though... a tragic one, but many of the best things ever written have been tragedies. It's a better calibre of film than say Earthsea or Arrietty any day... not that those were bad, but GotF was a great work.

I don't just watch films "to be entertained" though. Honestly, if that were the case, then I wouldn't be so into Ghibli. GotF is in my view one of their very best, because while it isn't like the cheerful adventures or realistic stories of normal people that they're known for, it's a powerful work of art.

I'm not arguing that its not a great piece of art - it is. It just isn't my cup of tea.

Its purely a personal thing for me, so please don't feel like I'm attacking Takahata's genius or people's preferences. I'm a person who hates to be scared by a film, hates creepy scenes, hates gore, I dislike seeing suffering, I don't much like mindless comedy - it needs to be stylish or clever or subtle... there are many many standard features of many films (and TV shows, and books) that I simply do not like.

Just my taste. It is why I vote it down though. Sorry!

Please go ahead and rightfully enjoy your different tastes.

I've explained in the past why I won't watch Grave of the Fireflies again. The ages of the brother and sister are too close to me and my sister and I was troubled with responsibility anxieties when I had to practically raise my sister myself. She even thanked me for this at her wedding. Like Saddles, it is a well made, artful film, but it is a personal thing.
